2019 Aston Martin Vantage AMR unleashed

Aston Martin pays tribute to its racing roots by adding a third pedal

Aston Martin has given driving and racing enthusiasts alike a reason to smile, introducing a new manual variant of its storied Vantage sports car.

Paying homage to the manufacturer’s rich history in motorsport, the Aston Martin Vantage AMR adds a seven-speed manual transmission to the donor vehicle’s Mercedes-AMG sourced 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine.

The Vantage AMR is strictly limited to 200 units worldwide and available in five liveries including a ‘Vantage 59’ example paying tribute to the manufacturer’s victory in the 1959 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Better yet, the Vantage AMR has been confirmed for Australia, though final numbers are still to be determined.

Pricing will start at $369,950 (plus on-road costs) – a significant $70,000 premium on the donor car – topping out at $409,950 (plus on-road costs) for the Vantage 59.

As before, the Vantage’s bent-eight makes 375kW and 625Nm – equating to a 0-100km/h time of 4.0 seconds.

While that zero-to-hero figure is 0.4 seconds off the equivalent automatic, the Vantage AMR promises more driver engagement with its manual ‘box and 95kg weight saving.

The stick shift is said to be motorsport-inspired, too, developed by gearbox-maker Graziano with a ‘dog-leg’ first gear and traditional H-pattern layout for gears second through to seventh.

There’s also an automatic blipping function to mimic traditional heel-and-toe downshifts along with software to accommodate full-throttle upshifts.

Elsewhere, the Vantage AMR features carbon ceramic brakes as standard and adaptive damping tuned to pre-configured Sport, Sport+ and Track settings.

The new performance hero is scheduled for release from September, 2019.

Of the 200 confirmed units, 141 will be available across four ‘designer specifications’: Sabiro Blue, Onyx Black, China Grey and White Stone.

The additional 59 examples will celebrate the 60th anniversary of Aston’s victory in the 1959 Le Mans race aboard the DBR1. These cars, pictured, will feature a Stirling Green and Lime exterior paint scheme and Dark Knight leather and Alcantara interior, finished with a signature AMR lime stripe and stitch.

The AMR version follows in the wheel tracks of the existing Rapide AMR and DB11 AMR while returning a manual transmission to the Vantage for the first time since 2017.

Aston Martin president and chief executive Andy Palmer said the AMR fulfilled the car-maker’s long-term commitment to manual transmissions.

“In a world of autonomous robo-taxis, Aston Martin will continue to advance the art and science of performance driving,” he said.

“With the Vantage AMR, we have created a thoroughly modern sports car that rewards effort and focus from the driver; the antidote to driving a computer game.”
