The Honda Civic Type R will offer soon offer even more performance and a slightly new look following the reveal of an upgraded MY20 versions at the Tokyo Auto Salon.
While the external revisions appear minor, with updates extending to a more aggressive front grille that improves air flow to the engine and a striking new Boost Blue paint colour (pictured), there's more to this update than meets the eye.
The headline revision for enthusiasts comes in the form of new two-piece brake rotors and upgraded pads for improved performance, along with reworked dampers designed to improve ride comfort.
Honda reckons the pads and rotors reduce fade and improve high-speed braking efficiency, while modifications to the front suspension "reduce friction and improve steering feel".
At the same time, Honda says the fettled front suspension set-up also elicits more direct responses, while stiffer rear bushings increase grip levels. The six-speed manual now features a shorter throw, too.
The 2020 Honda Civic Type R scores a redesigned gear knob and Alcantara-clad steering wheel inside, along with a new Active Sound Control system which brings more on-board sound (albeit synthesised) through the car’s speakers. The engine sound changes depending on which driving mode you’ve selected.
What remains unchanged is the Civic Type R’s punchy 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder, which carries over its 228kW/400Nm outputs and sends drive to the front wheels via a six-speed manual transmission and limited-slip differential.
The outgoing version, which set the front-drive production lap record at Bathurst, is currently priced at $51,990 plus on-road costs.
Honda Australia has advised there will be an update to the Civic Type R "later in 2020" but said it's too early to confirm exact release timing or any further details at this stage.
