2020 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid breaks cover

All-new mid-size hybrid sedan under consideration for Australian market

Hyundai has officially revealed the all-new Sonata Hybrid, sporting a solar panel roof and new technology.

Set to launch globally by the end of this year, Hyundai Australia has indicated to carsales.com.au the mid-size hybrid sedan is currently being considered for the Aussie market.

Powered by a 2.0-litre GDi four-cylinder petrol engine paired to six-speed transmission, the Sonata Hybrid produces 143kW and combined fuel economy is estimated to be about 5.0L/100km.

New technology dubbed Active Shift Control (ASC) is expected to underline the driving experience and fuel economy by increasing transmission shift time by 30 per cent. As well, Hyundai says ASC will improve acceleration as well as durability of the transmission “by minimising friction during a gear shift”.

The solar panels sitting atop the roof will help recharge the battery and with six hours of daily charging, can be expected to increase travel distance by an extra 1300km annually.

Other tech such as a digital key is set to be included, allowing remote start, alarm activation and lock/unlock functions via a smartphone.

Fresh exterior design elements include specially designed ‘eco-friendly’ alloy wheels, a ‘crosshole’ grille and rear spoiler.

Safety features such as lane keeping assist and autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection will come standard.

In Australia, Hyundai currently offers one hybrid-powered vehicle, the IONIQ. There are also plug-in hybrid and battery electric options for the IIONIQ, as well as the all-electric Kona Electric small SUV.
