2020 Land Rover Discovery Sport revealed
British SUV bound for Oz bringing a fresh design, new tech and hybrid powerLand Rover has revealed details of the updated 2020 Discovery Sport, which begins rolling into Australian showrooms from this month.
The British car-maker’s updated SUV sports a new exterior design that brings it into line with the rest of the Land Rover (and Range Rover) family, while elsewhere there are new trims, technologies and a range of new hybridised powertrains.
The Australian line-up will be available in three grades, S, SE, and HSE, and across a choice of two petrol and two diesel engines: 147kW P200 and 184kW P250 petrols, and 132kW D180 and 177kW D240 diesels, respectively.
Initially, the Australian line-up will be headed solely by the P200 petrol, priced from $60,500 (plus on-road costs) and available now. Other variants are set to join the range in the coming months.
The key design change to the Discovery Sport is the introduction of LED headlights, flanked by a reworked front bumper and grille.
Land Rover says it has jazzed up the interior accordingly, offering the latest Touch Pro infotainment system, premium materials and new seats promising “improved comfort and versatility”.
Australian vehicles will be fitted standard with a ‘5+2’ seven-seat layout, now accessed via more flexible 40:20:40 split-fold second row seating that offers up to 24 different seating configurations.
Land Rover’s wearable Activity Key – a boon for surfers and outdoor types – is also standard in Australia.
The Disco Sport is also said to be bigger inside, offering up to 1651 litres in boot space, while the fuel tank now measures 20 per cent bigger, at 65 litres.
Under the skin, Land Rover’s Premium Transverse Architecture (PTA) is now 13 per cent and stiffer, and facilitates the introduction of 48-volt mild-hybrid (MHEV) technology first introduced on the new Range Rover Evoque.
The electric system cuts the engine below 17km/h when the driver cuts the brakes, reducing fuel consumption and emissions. It will first be available on the Disco Sport’s turbo-diesel range, and will eventually be joined by a plug-in hybrid version.
In equipment terms, the 2020 Land Rover Discovery Sport now scores a smart rear-view mirror and Ground View functions – bringing greater visibility – wireless phone charging, 4G WiFi hotspot, USB and 12-volt outlets across all three rows of seating.
The safety suite has likewise been enhanced, extending to lane keep assist, autonomous emergency braking, front and rear parking sensors, driver conditioning monitoring, not to mention full airbag coverage and stability control systems.
Off-road ability is once again assured, with a wading depth of 600mm, all-Wheel Drive and a second-generation Active Driveline system, while braked towing capacity is rated up to 2200kg.
