2022 Maserati Grecale shapes up

Italian car-maker provides clearest look yet of its Porsche Macan challenger

Fresh images of the all-new 2022 Maserati Grecale have been released as part of the build-up to the mid-size sports-luxury SUV's launch later this year.

Designed to sit in the range below the current Maserati Levante, the new Grecale is pictured with Stellantis boss Carlos Tavares as part of a late-stage prototype drive.

The Stellantis CEO was visiting the Italian car-maker's Modena plant with fellow Stellantis chairman John Elkann to tour the new Maserati MC20 supercar production line, the Nettuno Engine Lab, new paint shop and R&D hub, as well as checking on the progress of the new Maserati Grecale.

Other than mentioning Tavares and Elkann's VIP visit, no further details of the Porsche Macan rival were released.

That said, details of the Levante's baby brother have already surfaced that suggest it will be one of the last vehicles to be based on a highly modified version of Alfa Romeo's Giorgio architecture following the revelation future replacements for the Maserati Ghibli and Levante will switch to the group's more advanced STLA platform.

Despite lacking the most up-to-date underpinnings, the Maserati Grecale is set to get a version of the MC20's all-new Nettuno 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 as well as a pair of hybrid and potentially Folgore all-electric powertrains.

Expected to be priced from around $100,000, the entry-level Maserati Grecale is expected to come with the same 245kW 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol powerplant with e-turbo 48-volt mild-hybrid system from the Maserati Ghibli hybrid.

A plug-in hybrid version is expected to borrow the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine and twin electric motor set-up from the newly revealed Jeep Wrangler 4xe, which has a 17.3kWh lithium-ion battery, 280kW/637Nm outputs, 4.7L/100km fuel consumption and a 40km EV range.

Expect in-car technology to match that of the MC20 with an infotainment system sourced from Harman Kardon and the car-maker's latest driver assist tech.

Based on the same platform as the Giulia, the Grecale will be built at Alfa Romeo's Cassino, Italy, factory alongside the Stelvio.

Once it arrives, execs predict combined sales of the Grecale and Levante will account for 70 per cent of all Maserati sales by 2025.
