Mercedes-Benz X-Class by the numbers

How does Benz’s new one-tonne ute compare with its key rivals?

There’s no doubt plenty has been written and said about the new Mercedes-Benz X-Class dual-cab. Benz has spruiked how good looking it is, how comfortable it is, how well equipped it is, how luxurious it is. But while there’s no doubt pick-ups like the X-Class are seen more and more as desirable rather than utilitarian, they still are intended to be working vehicles.

Which means the numbers are still key… So, it’s important to see how the X-Class stacks up against its rivals.

For the purpose of this number-crunching exercise we’re using the most expensive model from each of the model lines of the Mercedes’ key rivals: the Ford Ranger Wildtrak; Toyota HiLux SR5 and the Volkswagen Amarok TDI550 Ultimate. In the case of the Benz, it’s the X 250d 4Matic Power which will likely retail at or north of $60,000 when it lobs in Australia next April that is the benchmark. (Later a V6 Mercedes-Benz will set a new price high point for one-tonners Down Under).

And for the obvious reason that they share much technology under their differing skins, we’ve added the Nissan Navara ST-X to the mix to see just how differently or similarly it stacks up against the X-Class.
