You’re looking at the final version of the controversial Alfa Romeo 4C sports car, a (very) limited number of which have been confirmed for Australia.
Revealed overnight for the North American market, where just 33 examples will be offered, the limited-edition Alfa Romeo 4C Spider 33 Stradale Tributo pays homage to the Italian car-maker’s mid-engined 33 Stradale sports car of 1967.
The final Alfa 4C, which has already been discontinued in Europe, will be based on the convertible since the coupe was axed in the US in 2018, before 4C production ceases and its carbon-fibre tub continues in the new 2021 Maserati MC20 supercar.
Alfa Romeo Australia is yet to confirm when the 4C Spider 33 Stradale Tributo will arrive here or for how much, but it will be priced at $US79,995 at selected US dealers.
For further reference, just 10 examples of the special-edition Alfa 4C Competizione were made available in Australia last year, each priced a cool $30,900 higher than the standard 4C Coupe.
Both the 4C Coupe ($89,000 plus on-road costs) and roadster ($99,000 plus ORCs) remain available Down Under, where a total of just 304 have been sold since 2015, including just seven this year, so expect a price tag of well over $100K.
In a first for the 4C Spider, the 33 Stradale Tributo is based around a red-finished carbon-fibre monocoque. Designed by Centro Stile Alfa Romeo in Modena, it wears exclusive Rosso Villa d’Este tri-coat paint.
Other unique features include grey/gold five-hole alloy wheels (18-inch front/19-inch rear) and black Dinamica suede and tobacco leather interior colour scheme.
In case you weren’t around then, Alfa’s original 33 Stradale (Italian for ‘road going’) made its public debut on the eve of the 1967 Formula 1 Italian GP at Monza.
The hand-built mid-engined exotic was based on the Tipo 33 racer that won its class at the 1968 Daytona 24-Hour. Only 18 chassis were ever produced, with most completed cars painted in signature Alfa red and fitted with grey/gold wheels and a black-and-tobacco interior.
The modern-day 4C Spider 33 Stradale Tributo brings no mechanical upgrades, but does offer a commemorative badge, plaque and book, plus a host of previously optional (at least in the US) equipment as standard.
This includes an Akrapovic dual-mode centre-mounted exhaust, race-tuned suspension, bi-Xenon headlights, battery charger, car cover, suede/leather seat trim and carbon-fibre halo, rear wing and Italian flag mirror caps.
In the US, there are also ‘Centro Stile Alfa Romeo’ badges and the option of a piano-black front air intake and rear diffuser.
“Since its introduction in 2014, the 4C has been a halo vehicle for Alfa Romeo, exciting enthusiasts around the world and spearheading the relaunch of the brand in North America,” said Tim Kuniskis, global head of Alfa Romeo.
“The 4C Spider 33 Stradale Tributo is an instant Alfa Romeo classic that passes the torch to the next generation of iconic Alfa Romeo vehicles, including the upcoming Tonale PHEV crossover that will start production next year.”
Weighing just over 1000kg, the rear-drive Alfa Romeo 4C is powered by a 177kW/350Nm 1.75-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder, matched to a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, and is claimed to hit 100km/h in 4.5sec.
