Alfa Romeo is reportedly working on a new electrified large luxury sedan to do battle with the likes of the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class.
Spanish automotive site motor.es reports the big new sedan will sit above the Giulia in Alfa Romeo’s line-up, and is slated for global debut in 2025.
If the publication’s initial rendering is any guide, the famed Italian marque could have a winner on its hands, wrapped in a design that would also shade the Audi A6 and Maserati Ghibli.
While large luxury sedans are hardly the flavour of the month in SUV-crazed markets like Australia, there is hope the unconfirmed and as-yet unnamed four-door can help Alfa Romeo transition to greener pastures as it bids farewell to the Giulietta small hatch and 4C sports car.
The mystery E-segment premium saloon would also revive a strong history of big Alfa Romeo sports sedans, including staples like the 166 produced between 1996 and 2007.
A large sedan would also broaden the buyer scope for Alfa Romeo, which is also readying the Tonale compact SUV for production later this year.
According to the report, which doesn’t cite any sources, the luxury sedan will borrow Fiat-Chrysler’s billion-dollar Giorgio platform from the Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio, and will be available with petrol, plug-in hybrid and EV powertrains.
If it comes to fruition, don’t be surprised if the new Alfa borrows bits and pieces from Peugeot-Citroen following the recent merger between FCA and PSA under Stellantis.
But we preface everything in this story with an if: Alfa diehards are all too familiar with drawn-out turnaround plans, including a five-year plan announced in 2014 to produce eight new models and quadruple sales within four years.
