Lamborghini’s new Urus SUV will be the marque’s only new model family until at least 2025. That’s the news from the brand’s boss man, Stefano Domenicali.
The Italian sports car brand currently has just two model ranges: the V10-engined Huracan and the range-topping Aventador V12, both of which are available in coupe and convertible forms. The Urus SUV takes Lambo’s model count to three.
Just unveiled and set to arrive in dealerships across the globe in the next few months, Urus leverages Lamborghini’s Audi connections. It moves the Raging Bull brand closer to the mainstream — albeit via what it claims is a world-first “Super SUV” with a $390,000 pricetag.
Domenicali says Urus, which is already a sellout success, will effectively double Lamborghini’s sales globally by the end of 2019.
In 2017 the marque delivered just over 3800 cars globally. In 2018 that should hit 5000 with Urus at its full production run rate by year’s end.
“We’re going to have production capacity for more than 7500,” Domencali told motoring.com.au.
“We’re going to hit that number in 2019 — because this year will not be [at full production for] a full year.”
Ultimately, Domencali says aspirations for the brand are circa 10,000 units per annum. But not any time soon.
“I think that first of all we need to consider where we were a couple of years ago. We were selling 1000 cars. It [current levels] is a big step. We’re going to do another step [with Urus], so we need to be prudent.
“For sure, as soon as we have stabilised the growth, in a very methodical way, what we can see is that we’re going to think of introducing another model … but in the second part [of the next decade] – 2025 to 2030 -- in that range. Not before. It would be wrong,” he opined.
Domenicali says Lamborghini is still to finalise plans for that model. It may arrive at either end of the existing line-up.
“Still discussing… Still discussing… Still under discussion,” he hedged.
“We see a lot of competitors attacking for the lower side of it… But we still have the time to discuss. And to make sure that we are once again different from the others,” Domenicali stated.
