Queensland petrol retailer charges up a stir by promoting the price of EV power
In what’s being described as an Australian first, a Queensland service station has caused a stir on social media after it added the cost of electricity to its petrol-dominated price board.
Posted to the Electric Vehicles for Australia’s Facebook page by an eagle-eyed Queensland motorist, the image of the price board at Pacific Fuels service station in Drayton highlighted the cheap price of electricity relative to that of petrol.
It attracted the curiosity of electric vehicle advocates and curious social media users alike, with over 100 shares and 200 comments.
While EVs make up less than one per cent of new car sales in Australia, EV sales in May 2021 increased by more than 300 per cent year-on-year to 436 registrations, excluding the sales of EV-leader Tesla.
According to the carsales New Car Showroom, 14 EVs are available for purchase in Australia, with those priced under $68,740 eligible for the Victorian government’s $3000 EV subsidy.
A growing number of new EVs are set to land on Australian shores by the end of this year and a host of car-makers including Bentley, Fiat, Ford of Europe and Jaguar have announced their intentions to become EV-only brands by 2030.
