BMW M4 Convertible revealed

Covers come off M version of BMW 4 Series drop-top, complete with 375kW and all-wheel drive in Competition spec

The lid has been lifted off the 2021 BMW M4 Competition Convertible xDrive, effectively a drop-top version of the new M4 Coupe.

The new BMW M4 Convertible rounds out the German car-maker’s latest mid-size performance car range as the third body variant alongside the M4 coupe and M3 sedan.

The new-gen M3/M4 family is set to be joined by at least one more addition – the track-ready BMW M4 CS or CSL Coupe.

Until then, the single-variant M4 Competition Convertible carries over the best parts of its hard-top siblings, including a twin-turbo 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder engine slamming down 375kW of power and 650Nm of torque via an eight-speed M Steptronic automatic transmission with three shift programs and steering wheel mounted shift paddles.

It will also come with the BMW xDrive all-wheel drive system that becomes optional for Aussie M3 and M4 buyers from November 2021. An active M differential delivers rear-biased power delivery, and there’s the option of 4WD, 4WD Sport and 2WD modes.

Making it just 0.2 seconds slower than the slightly lighter M3 and M4 xDrive models, BMW claims the M4 Competition Convertible will launch from zero to 100km/h in just 3.7sec, on its way to an electronically-limited top speed of 250km/h – or 280km/h with the M Driver’s Package.

Adaptive dampers, a bi-modal exhaust and 19-inch front and 20-inch rear M light forged alloy wheels come standard.

As with the new BMW 4 Series Convertible that arrived here earlier this year, the 2021 M4 Convertible’s soft-top is said to be 40 per cent lighter than the folding hard-top of its predecessor.

It can be opened or closed in 18 seconds at speeds of up to 50km/h, while the boot has also grown in size, with an additional 80 litres now on offer.

Inside the cabin, BMW’s Live Cockpit Professional with cloud-based navigation and Intelligent Personal Assistant is fitted as standard, alongside tri-zone climate control, ambient interior lighting and a hi-fi speaker system.

M Sport seats are finished in Extended Merino leather trim. Ventilation will be an optional extra.

Outside, the drop-top M4 shares the same divisive front-end as the M3/M4 family. That includes the large vertical kidney grilles, an M specific diffuser, large air intakes up front and quad exhaust outlets at the rear.

Owners keen on track days can option M Drive Professional, which adds Track Mode and a 10-stage adjustable traction control system, plus the M Drift Analyser and M Laptimer.

An M Carbon exterior package can be added, as can an M Race Track Package, which cuts around 25kg of weight by adding lighter M Carbon ceramic brakes, M Carbon bucket seats and bespoke M wheels.

Pricing for the all-new BMW M4 Competition Convertible is yet to be revealed. Production is set to begin in July, ahead of first Australian deliveries from late 2021.
