BMW M5 Competition: Full Aussie details

More power and extra equipment for Bavarian super-sedan

BMW Australia has already confirmed that when it arrives here in October, the new BMW M5 Competition ($229,900 plus on-road costs) will replace the $199,900 M5 Launch Edition released Down Under in April.

Now it has announced exactly what you’ll get for the extra $30,000 (the BMW M5 Competition still undercuts its chief rival, the $239,240 Mercedes-AMG E 63 S sedan, by $9340), apart from its ballistic 460kW/750Nm 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 and extensive chassis upgrades.

Extra standard equipment for the Australian-spec BMW M5 Competition — which is now a standalone model rather than a ‘Competition Package’ option as before — will include an M Carbon Engine Cover, 1400-Watt 16-speaker Bowers & Wilkins Diamond surround sound system and four-zone climate control.

Other new features are soft-close front and rear doors, an electric rear roller sunblind, roller sunblinds for rear side windows, ambient air package and BMW Gesture Control.

In addition to its specific 20-inch BMW M Y-spoke alloy wheels with bicolour finish (style 789 M), the BMW M5 Competition will be available with two no-cost 20-inch wheel options: style 706 M bicolour as seen on the M5 Launch Edition, or in Jet Black.

Other no-cost options will include six metallic paint colours and non-metallic Alpine White, while extra-cost BMW Individual Paintworks will include five ‘Frozen’ finishes and Pure Metal Silver.

Full leather ‘Merino’ upholstery is standard and available in Silverstone, Aragon Brown or Black colours, while BMW Individual ‘Merino’ is also available for no additional cost in Caramel, Smoke White and Tartufo finishes with contrast stitching.

If you don’t like the standard Aluminium Carbon Structure interior trim, you can choose no-cost dark Aluminium Carbon Structure or Fineline Ridge fine-wood trim.

Also available at no extra cost are BMW Individual interior trims including Piano Black, Fine-wood trim with Plum Brown High-Gloss and fine-wood Sen Light Brown.

Extra-cost options for the BMW M5 Competition include an electric glass sunroof (which replaces the carbon-fibre roof), steering wheel heating, M Carbon Ceramic Brakes, sun protection glazing, active front seat ventilation, front/rear seat heating and front massage function.

Other optional extras comprise Galvanic embellishers for controls, Ceramic control surrounds, ski and snowboard bag, BMW Night Vision with Pedestrian Recognition and Rear Seat Entertainment Professional, which adds two tiltable independent 10-inch high-res screens and Blue-Ray drive.

And surprisingly, while Simplified Chinese Language for iDrive interface is a no-cost option, Apple CarPlay and Wireless Charging will cost extra.

There’s also the BMW M Driver’s Package, which increases top speed from 250 to 305km/h and buys you a BMW Driving Experience Advance 2 Course that’s redeemable in Australia, Germany, Sweden, South Africa or the USA.

Rounding out the options list is the $6700 Indulgence Package combining Rear Seat Entertainment Professional, TV function and massage function.

Arriving in Australia in October alongside the new BMW M2 Competition, the BMW M5 Competition brings just 19kW more power (now 460kW at 600rpm) but hits 100km/h in 3.3 seconds — 0.3sec quicker than the standard M5.

Peak torque is unchanged but its 750Nm is delivered over 1800-5860rpm (an extra 200rpm) and Australian fuel consumption is listed at 10.6L/100km, with CO2 at 242g/km.

Unique to the M5 Competition is a model-specific M Sport exhaust system, retuned M Steptronic eight-speed automatic transmission and revised rear biased M xDrive four-wheel drive system with Active M Differential.

Competition-specific chassis tweaks include new engine mounts (with 900N/mm spring rates as opposed to the standard M5’s 580N/mm), and revised “kinematic and elastokinematic properties” of the double-wishbone front and five-link rear suspension systems.

Apart from a 7mm-lower ride height, the BMW M5 Competition runs unique damper and spring rates (the latter by 10 per cent), plus increased negative wheel camber up front, revised anti-roll bars and rear suspension toe links attached via racing-style ball-joints rather than rubber mounts.

As the name suggests, the M5 Competition’s brakes are also uprated for track work, via lightweight M Compound brakes comprising fixed six-piston callipers up front and floating single-piston callipers at rear.

Upgraded tyres measure 275/35/R20 at the front and 285/35/R20 out back, and M Carbon Ceramic discs are optional.

Other specific BMW M5 Competition features include unique body-colour door-handles, high-gloss black trim, exterior mirrors, signature M front fender gills and BMW Individual high-gloss Shadow Line window surrounds and B-pillar trims.

High-gloss black also sets apart the M-specific kidney grille, rear spoiler and M5 boot lid logo with ‘Competition’ lettering, while black chrome exhaust outlets complete the exterior theme.

Inside, piped M5 floor mats carry over and electric M Multifunction seats continue to come with illuminated M5 badging, but ‘M5 Competition’ graphics now appear in the specific M instrument cluster, joining a colour M Head-Up Display and 10.25-inch Touch Control Display, which is standard BMW 5 Series fare.

“We have been highly encouraged by the initial impressions of the M5 Competition internationally,” said BMW Group Australia CEO, Vikram Pawah.

“The strong uplift in performance and specification for the M5 Competition, as well as its price position, will make a compelling case in the ultra-high performance sedan segment.”
