The highly-anticipated 213kW Golf R Grid Edition will arrive in Australia from December priced at $47,490 plus on-road costs, making it $5500 cheaper than the regular six-speed manual Golf R hot hatch.
Designed to maintain Volkswagen’s sales dominance in the hot hatch realm, the pared-back Golf R Grid Edition ditches leather seats and shrinks its fancy touch-screen infotainment from 9.2 to 8.0 inches, while adding black mirrors.
But the standard Golf R’s 213kW/380Nm engine remains, as does its 4MOTION all-wheel drive set-up, bigger brakes and wheels and so on. That means it is just as quick as the regular ($52,990 plus ORCs) Golf R.

Combined, the Golf R and Golf GTI account for around one in every five Golfs sold in this country – one of the highest percentages globally – and by introducing more models the German car-maker hopes to continue its reign as the hot hatch king.
Customers who want the seven-speed dual-clutch (DSG) automatic gearbox will pay $49,990, while a wagon variant of the Golf R Grid Edition is also offered buts it’s DSG-only and retails for $51,990 plus ORCs.
Volkswagen Australia is also readying a range of other go-fast Golf models, including the Volkswagen Golf GTI Original, which features black 18-inch alloy wheels and a 169kW/350Nm 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, and is priced from $36,990. The DSG model costs $39,490 (both plus ORCs).
There is also the Volkswagen Golf GTI Performance Edition 1 and the Golf R Wolfsburg Edition models. Check out the full price list below.
Volkswagen recently told motoring.com.au that a Golf GTI Performance Edition 2 is on its way and there's also no reason why some of the special-editions couldn’t become permanent members of the Golf portfolio.
High-riding Golf GTI-powered SUV too
Volkswagen has high-performance models for everyone it seems, with its new GTI-spec Tiguan 162TSI essentially a slightly larger, high-riding version of the Golf GTI.
Priced from $45,990, the new Volkswagen Tiguan 162TSI gets a 162kW 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine similar to that in the Golf GTI, but adds 4MOTION all-wheel drive, a seven-speed DSG auto and big 20-inch alloy wheels.
Adaptive suspension, adaptive cruise control and traffic jam assist are standard, as is unique microfleece (suede-like) seat upholstery. The sporty Tiguan arrives in December.
Finally, Volkswagen has also announced pricing for its all-new Arteon flagship sedan, which will cost $65,490 plus ORCs when it arrives in showrooms in November.
