Every Mercedes-Benz model to get EV version by 2025

German car-maker ramps up pure-electric ambitions and announces three new pure-electric architectures

Mercedes-Benz has declared that "where market conditions" allow it will be a completely pure-electric brand by 2030, almost a decade earlier than originally planned.

As part of the plans, parent Daimler confirmed it would invest €40 billion ($A65bn) by 2030 to help it take on its EV rivals, including Tesla.

Originally, as part of Daimler's Ambition 2039 strategy, Benz would have introduced an emissions-free fleet far later. Now the car-maker claims that it will begin offering a battery-electric version in all its segments from 2022 and that by 2025 every single model range will have an EV option.

Enabling its shift to pure-electric power, Mercedes-Benz has confirmed it will launch its previously announced all-new MMA EV architecture for small cars in 2024 that will be immediately followed in 2025 by three all-new architectures that will span the entire range of sedans, coupes and SUVs.

The MB.EA platform will cover medium and larger passenger vehicles, including SUVs, while the AMG.EA architecture, as the name suggests, will underpin the next generation of Mercedes-AMG high-performance EVs.

The electric AMG rollout is expected to include both a coupe replacement for the AMG GT and the next convertible SL.

Finally, the Van.EA architecture will be used for its light commercial range.

Crucially, all three new platforms are dedicated pure-electric architectures that will not be able to support combustion powertrains, suggesting any petrol or diesel models will be based on a revised versions of today's platforms.

Mercedes-Benz's rapid expansion into EVs is already well underway. Before the end of 2021 it will have launched the EQA, EQB, EQS and EQV.

In 2022 the product bonanza continues with the the launch of the soon-to-be-revealed EQE sedan, EQE SUV and EQS SUV.

Both a Mercedes-AMG and Mercedes-Maybach version of the EQS are also expected to be unwrapped shortly.

To meet the huge increase in demand for batteries for all its new models, Mercedes-Benz has said it will build eight new gigafactories that include one in the US and four in Europe.

To compensate for the huge investment in EVs, Benz says it will cut its investment in combustion engines and plug-in hybrids by up to 80 per cent by 2026 over 2019 levels.

The car-maker says that by 2025 it now expects EVs and hybrids to account for 50 per cent of its sales, with full battery-powered cars to account for the majority of that figure.
