The São Paulo motor show was home to a number of intriguing concept car reveals, including the Volkswagen Tarok ute and the Fiat Fastback, which looks suspiciously like a BMW X4.
Boasting a coupe-style exterior design that channels a newfound luxury direction, the Fiat Fastback SUV concept is expected to become a production model for Brazil and other developing regions by 2020.
Understood to be based on the same 'small wide 4x4’ chassis architecture as the Jeep Compass, Fiat 500X and Fiat Toro small ute, the new model channels the same mojo that makes cars like the BMW X4 and Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe stand out.
Unlike most traditional SUVs, the rear-end of the Fiat Fastback concept tapers off to give the vehicle a more athletic appearance. Together with flared wheel-arches and a front-end that looks more sports car than SUV with its slim LED lights, the design is certainly bold.
According to carsales.com.au's sister site in Brazil, WM1.com.br, the interior features an oval-shaped steering wheel and an infotainment system similar to those seen in the Jeep Renegade and Compass.
However, the Fiat Fastback gets an upmarket gear selector -- a rotating dial like those seen in some Range Rover vehicles.
As the first material proof of Fiat Chrysler’s $2.9 billion investment in its Brazilian design and manufacturing operations, the Fiat Fastback is likely to be one of the 15 new or renewed vehicles released in the region in the next five years.
The design concept was a left-hand drive vehicle and it's not clear if the vehicle's development will include right-hand drive models.
FCA Australia's corporate communications director, Tracie Stoltenburg, would not confirm or deny that the Fastback SUV concept is on the radar for the Australian market.
"I can't comment on what future products we are or are not considering," she said.
Currently Fiat sells just three passenger vehicles in Australia: the Fiat 500/Abarth micro-car, the Mazda MX-5-based Abarth 124 Spider and the Fiat 500X small SUV. There are also two Fiat commercial vehicles, the Doblo and Ducato vans.
