The first road-ready 2020 Toyota Supra to roll off the production line has fetched $A2.93 million at a US auction.
The matte grey ‘Launch Edition’ variant was purchased by a mystery bidder from the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale auction overnight, not even a week after the 2020 Toyota Supra officially broke cover at the Detroit motor show.
While the money will go towards a valuable cause – the American Heart Association and Bob Woodruff Foundation – the sum is some 37-times greater than the price of a regular Launch Edition Supra, which costs $A78,441 in the US.
The result also meant the Supra outsold the very first 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 – also unveiled in Detroit and subsequently sold at auction – by a hefty margin in the order of $A1.4 million.
Pricing for the new A90 Toyota Supra is yet to be finalised for Australia. Its sister car, the BMW Z4, goes on sale this month priced from $85,000. The caveat is that the turbo six-cylinder powered Z4 variant – the one that shares its heart with Supra – costs $124,900 (plus on-road costs).
Will the Supra come in under the magic $100,000 mark in Australia? And if so, by how much?
We can't say for certain. But rest assured, it will be less than the generous auction price paid in the US.
