The Genesis G70 Shooting Brake has been revealed in Europe, where it will be a key part of the launch of the Korean premium brand in mid-2021.
More importantly for Aussies, the first Genesis G70 wagon will be released Down Under in the third quarter of this year, following the June launch of the facelifted G70 sedan on which it’s based.
The closely related Genesis GV70 – the all-new mid-size luxury SUV that will rival the Audi Q5, BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC – will arrive in Australia between the 2021 G70 sedan and wagon, in July.
Revealed late today in Frankfurt after being spied several times, the Euro-focussed Genesis G70 Shooting Brake is the same size as the sedan, at 4685mm long, 1850mm wide and 1400mm tall, with a 2835mm wheelbase.
However, it adds 40 per cent more cargo space larger than the G70 sedan and its folding rear seats are split in a 4:2:4 format.
The first G70 Shooting Brake also shares the facelifted G70 sedan’s new front-end design, including a signature Crest Grille set lower than the quad headlights.
The G70 wagon’s new side profile, meantime, is punctuated by a single-piece glass hatch with a floating integral spoiler.
Few other details have been revealed, but the G70 wagon will share the upgraded G70 sedan’s powertrain options, which in Australia means carryover 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder (185kW/353Nm) and 3.3-litre twin-turbo petrol V6 (272kW/510Nm) engines.
There’s no sign yet of the newer, more powerful 3.5-litre turbo-petrol V6 (280kW/530Nm) from the larger Genesis G80 sedan, nor the bullocking new 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder turbo-diesel from the Genesis GV80 large SUV.
However, expect all of the upgrades from the 2021 Genesis G70 sedan, including a louder exhaust for the V6, larger 10.2-inch touch-screen infotainment system, built-in dash-cam and navigation-based adaptive cruise control.
These high-tech additions are expected to push up pricing across the G70 range, which currently opens at $59,300 plus on-road costs for the 2.0T and tops out at $79,950 for the 3.3T Ultimate Sport.
The Genesis G70 Shooting Brake is likely to command a price premium while still undercutting its most direct mid-size European rivals such as the Audi A4 Avant, BMW 3 Series Touring and Mercedes-Benz C-Class Estate.
“We are delighted to reveal this bespoke product – tailored for our European customers – so soon after revealing news of our arrival into the region,” said Genesis Motor Europe managing director Dominique Boesch.
“The G70 Shooting Brake marries luxury and European automotive heritage with our design philosophy of Athletic Elegance.”
