Ford Endura scores big 12-inch touch-screen – overseas

Tech upgrade for US Ford Edge yet to be confirmed for Australia, where Endura continues for now

Ford Australia says it remains committed to the Ford Endura, but won’t confirm whether the SUV will receive the same significant tech upgrade revealed overnight for its US sister model, the Ford Edge.

Australia’s Ford Endura and North America’s Ford Edge are both produced in Canada – the sole production source of the five-seat right-hand drive diesel version sold here and in Europe.

A larger seven-seat version is built in China only for local consumption.

The second-generation Ford Edge/Endura was launched in the US in 2015 and then facelifted in late 2018, when it finally debuted in Australia, but has not set the sales charts alight.

Sales of the large five-seat SUV have slumped 38 per cent this year, outsold four-to-one by the bigger, more expensive, Ranger-based Ford Everest seven-seater. It currently accounts for just 1.5 per cent of a segment dominated by popular seven-seaters like the Toyota Prado and Kluger.

Despite reports that Ford is planning the first three-row, seven-seat version of its new Escape mid-size SUV, which finally arrives in Australia next month, Ford Australia says it will stick with its previously announced SUV line-up, at least for now.

“We haven’t shared any plans for the Edge/Endura facelift,” said Ford Australia communications director Matt Moran, when asked by carsales whether the Endura will be facelifted or replaced by a seven-seat Escape.

“I don’t have any news to share on those particular points, other than to say that Endura remains part of our Australian line-up [and] we have no plans to introduce any Escape variants other than those already announced.”

For the record, North America’s 2021 Ford Edge and Edge ST have been upgraded with a biggest-in-class 12.0-inch touch-screen, SYNC 4A infotainment system and Ford Co-Pilot360 driver assistance functions as standard.

The new multimedia set-up brings connected built-in navigation and cloud connectivity with conversational voice recognition capability, plus two extra USB ports (including an USB-C outlet) and the option of wireless phone charging and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

Subtle refinements to the Ford Edge’s interior and exterior design are also part of the MY21 upgrade in the US, where safety features include enhanced active park assist, evasive steering assist, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go and lane centring, and a 180-degree front camera.

While the Australian Ford Endura’s 2.0-litre diesel engine was subject to a temporary stop-sale order in 2019 due to fuel-injection issues, the US Ford Edge is powered by a 3.5-litre petrol V6 and, for the hot ST version, a 2.7-litre twin-turbo V6.
