The new Ford Mustang has topped the Supercars championship pre-season test, but not the one we expected.
While title-holder Scott McLaughlin set eighth fastest time in his DJR Team Penske Mustang, it was Tickford Racing’s Cameron Waters in his Monster Energy Ford Mustang who was fastest, setting a best time that did not threaten either the qualifying lap record.
In sunny and warm conditions, Waters’ official best lap was a 1 min 30.7625, more than 1.7sec outside the qualifying mark.
How much can be read into these results is up for debate, as some teams including DJRTP didn’t go for a full-on hot lap, electing to keep their full performance hidden until the Adelaide championship opener in a couple of weeks.
And they weren’t alone, with some teams including the factory Red Bull Holden Racing Team lacking green tyres for a hot lap and finishing behind the Castrol Racing Nissan Altima of Rick Kelly in 14th and 19th.
Waters finished narrowly ahead of McLaughlin’s team-mate Fabian Coulthard, with Waters’ team-mate Chaz Mostert third and Erebus Penrite Holden Commodore driver David Reynolds fourth. Making it four Mustangs in the top five was Will Davison in his Milwaukee Racing Ford Mustang.
All six Mustangs that will star in Adelaide made the top 10 today.
Controversially, Erebus packed up and went home early after being repeatedly pinged for exceeding the circuit noise limit.
