Genesis G80 confirmed for June Australian launch

The fledgling Hyundai luxury brand will launch the Mercedes E-Class-sized Genesis G80 priced from $68,900 (plus on-road costs), officials have confirmed. And they will do so from a new dealer network headed by a brand-new showroom in Sydney’s Pitt Street Mall.
The G80, which is essentially a rebadged version of the Hyundai Genesis that has been on sale in Australia since 2015, will be launched concurrently with the smaller Genesis G70 – an upmarket version of the Kia Stinger.
Pricing for the G70 is due to be released in the coming weeks.
The G80 will be available in two trim levels in Australia, with the price of entry bringing a circa $7000 premium on the outgoing Genesis large car.
The $68,900 entry version, simply plated as the Genesis G80, will bring standard features such as 18-inch alloy wheels, adaptive LED headlights and LED daytime running lights, LED fog lights and taillights. Inside there’s heated leather seats, a 9.2-inch infotainment screen with sat-nav, 360-degree camera system, 17-speaker audio system, wireless phone charging and 12-way powered front seats with driver’s memory.
On the safety front, the G80 packages nine airbags, automated emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian detection, blind spot monitoring with rear-cross traffic alert, adaptive cruise control and more.
Further up the order is the G80 Ultimate, priced from $88,900 (plus on-road costs). Over and above the entry version, it adds 19-inch wheels, Nappa leather upholstery and suede headliner, enhanced 16-way adjustable driver’s seat, a smart key card, electrically-powered rear seats, heated and ventilated seats, heated steering wheel, acoustic tinted windows, panoramic sunroof, rear door window shades, soft-close doors and a powered tailgate.
There’s more on-board tech, too, in the form of a head-up display, digital driver’s instrument cluster, air filtration system for the car’s climate control and illuminated scuff plates at the doors.
The Genesis G80 uses the same engine irrespective of trim level, a 3.8-litre naturally-aspirated V6 (232kW/397Nm). The V6 sends drive to the rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Genesis will also offer an optional $4000 Sport Design package bringing interior and exterior cosmetic enhancements, along with an optional $3000 panoramic roof.
All G80s will ride on adaptive suspension and employ a chassis tune developed for Australian roads.
After numerous delays, the latest of which centred on setbacks to the construction of its Pitt Street showroom, Genesis will launch in Australia touting itself as a genuine rival to Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz.
A spokesman for the car-maker said both the G70 and G80 were ready to be rolled out together in time for the new Sydney showroom.
Genesis is also planning to have a presence in Melbourne and Brisbane, originally with non-traditional showrooms in city malls. However, at last count, plans for those sites had been put on hold.
