Genesis GV80 SUV delayed for Australia

Hyundai-owned Genesis luxury brand delays arrival of its seven-seat GV80 large SUV Down Under

Genesis has confirmed its first SUV – the Genesis GV80 – will debut globally later this year and that the Australian release of the all-new seven-seat luxury SUV will take place next year -- not by year's end as previously promised by global boss Manfred Fitzgerald.

A spokesperson for Genesis Australia told carsales.com.au that the "…Global reveal for GV80, the brand’s first SUV, will happen in late 2019. GV80 will arrive in Australia next year".

Expect high levels of luxury when the Genesis GV80 drops in 2020

When it arrives, the Genesis GV80 will join the mid-size Genesis G70 sedan (from $59,300 plus on-road costs) and the large Genesis G80 sedan (from $68,900 plus ORCs), both of which finally landed in the Korean luxury brand's sole dealership in Sydney in June.

The upcoming GV80 SUV will share its platform architecture with the next-generation G80 sedan due in 2020, meaning all-new infotainment systems, new technology and also powertrain availability.

The G80 underpinnings suggest the GV80 SUV will offer both rear- and all-wheel drive configurations – and the choice of four-, six- and perhaps even eight-cylinder power.

The GV80 concept design is understood to be indicative of the production model - except those slimline headlights won't be quite that slim

Currently, the brand's turbocharged four-cylinder engines produces 179kW/353Nm, with the Kia Stinger-sourced twin-turbo V6 making 272kW/510Nm. The aging Tau 5.0-litre V8 – which is not offered in Australia presently – makes 343kW/520Nm and is likely to be replaced.

Genesis has not stated whether the option of a turbo-diesel engine will be offered in its GV80, though the 147kW/440Nm 2.2-litre R-Spec diesel under the bonnet of the Hyundai Santa Fe is a distinct possibility.

Rumours have also placed a turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine under the bonnet of the new Genesis SUV, as well battery electric (BEV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and even hydrogen fuel-cell (FCEV) variants, as premiered in the Hyundai NEXO in 2018.

The production version of the Genesis GV80 SUV is unlikely to offer twin second row seats

The Genesis GV80 is one of six new models the brand plans to unveil before 2021, and follows the SUV concept's debut at the New York motor show back in 2017.

When it arrives in Australia in 2020, the GV80 will compete against rivals that include the Audi Q7, BMW X5, Lexus RX, and Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class.

Genesis is expected to offer a smaller, five-seat SUV – possibly dubbed GV70 – as part of its new model assault.

That model will challenge the likes of the strong-selling BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class SUVs, not to mention the Audi Q5 and Lexus NX.

Orange leather upholstery will be optional

According to sources close to the brand, the seven-seat Genesis GV80 SUV is tipped to make its public debut at the 2019 Los Angeles motor show this November.
