Stand by folks, because the Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe is set to get even hotter, and its newly revealed GT 4-door will get plug-in hybrid power.
Not content with the fearsome GT R, Mercedes-Benz’s horsepower hoons have confirmed that both an AMG GT Black Series coupe and an electrified AMG GT sedan will arrive in 2020.
Mercedes-Benz chief Dieter Zetsche dropped a bombshell on stage at the Geneva motor show when he confirmed the new AMG GT 4-Door would soon be available as a plug-in hybrid.
In a follow-up roundtable with Australia media, Mercedes-AMG chairman Tobias Moers put a little flesh on the bones, confirming it would be a high-performance hybrid, just like last year’s GT sedan concept.
That means the ability to pump out more than 600kW and thunder to 100km/h in less than three seconds!
“Could be. Theoretically possible,” Moers grinned.
Moers also confirmed the GT PHEV would be seen in 2020 and the term ‘EQ Power Plus’ would be part of its name.
AMG’s chief hoon also revealed that development of the GT R Black Series coupe was also underway.
“There is a GT variant still [we need to do],” Moers said. “There’s still a kind of sub-brand of AMG that needs support.
“We’ve started the journey of Black Series.”
Asked when the car will launch, he added: “2020 is going to be an interesting year.”
The Black Series holds a hallowed place in AMG history. So far here have only been five previous Blacks and all of them have been two-doors; the SLK 55, CLK 63, SL 65, C 63 Coupe and the SLS.
Moers declined to offer additional detail on the Black Series, but such is the progression of AMG’s power curve, it’s feasible to suggest 500kW is in the target sights.
The GT R punches out 430kW from its 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 while the new AMG GT 63 S 4-door Coupe makes 470kW from the same engine.
Moers acknowledged the prodigious power of the GT R Black Series will be technical challenge, but he is promising AMG will find a way to tame it.
“The next Black Series done out of the GT must be something really surprising. And this is what we’re working on,” he said
Somewhat surprisingly, although he's hinted at it before, Moers gave up the existence of the GT R Black Series to Aussie media before it was even raised.
