Honda reveals wild Civic Type R ute

Japanese car-maker butchers fast hot hatch into punchy pick-up; aims to break Nurburgring lap record for front-drive utes

Honda has celebrated its first year of production of the FK8 Civic Type R by creating a concept for a ute variant.

Claimed to be the fastest front-wheel drive pick-up money can buy, the fast Honda ute concept is said to be the work of a team of engineers based at the car-maker's British manufacturing facility in Swindon.

Developed under the codename Project P, the Civic Type R ute manages to retain the production car's huge rear wing, although in its pick-up application the large aerodynamic aid is moveable -- allowing easier access to the load bay which, incidentally, has been designed to accommodate a pair of lawnmowers.

Under the bonnet, the fifth-gen Civic Type R's 228kW/400Nm 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol four carries over completely unchanged.

Thus Honda claims that against the clock, the small ute can hit 100km/h in less than six seconds and top out at 266km/h.

To help continue the celebrations, the Japanese car-maker says it is considering taking its concept to the Nurburgring to set a new lap record for the fastest front-wheel drive ute.

Sadly, Honda says it has no plans to push the Civic Type R ute into production.
