INEOS Grenadier coming to Australia

No-frills off-road workhorse start-up is keen on Australian market

British off-road vehicle start-up INEOS Grenadier has confirmed Australia is one of its target markets.

The people behind the launch of the no-frills UK-designed rival for the Land Rover Defender told carsales this week that the Australian marketplace was very much on the brand’s roadmap.

To date there has been no confirmation that the body-on-frame off-roader, which is yet to be revealed would come Down Under.

“It’s not a secret that we’re interested in Australia,” company spokespeople told carsales via local brand connections.

“We don’t want to talk about timing but Grenadier is coming to Australia,” they confirmed.

UK chemical giant INEOS is bankrolling the 4x4 project. The Grenadier is a passion project of INEOS boss, British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

No expense has been spared on the development of the vehicle, nor the talent recruited to build it. Previous roles for the senior engineering staff include high ranking positions at Daimler, Fuso and Magna.

The vehicle has been designed from the ground-up as a serious heavy-duty off-road workhorse and will feature BMW and ZF powertrains. A number of body styles will eventually be manufactured.

Grenadier’s design, engineering and assembly will draw on the resources of companies like Magna and Italian agricultural machinery specialist Carraro.

Expected to debut in 2021, the Grenadier will be built in two factories, in Portugal (bodies, etc) and South Wales (chassis and assembly).

A first look at the completed body design of the first INEOS Grenadier variant is expected later this year.
