Instagram's top cars revealed

Social media has spoken and American cars are so hot right now

Instagram is one of the pre-eminent social media websites today and while celebrities, pop-stars, yoga vids and bircher breakfast bowls dominate, cars also rate strongly.

With an unending amount of vehicular eye candy on offer, website Veygo has put together a list of the most Instagrammed cars on the internet.

It reached its conclusions by taking the two most popular hashtags – ways to identify and search topics and subjects on Instagram – relevant to the vehicles in production today and combined the total.

Some vehicles were left off the list, such as the Volkswagen #golf, because like many words in the English language there is more than one significant meaning.

As it turns out, American cars dominated the top 10 list with four vehicles, while Germany had three, Japan claimed two and Italy had one with the Lamborghini Aventador.

Logic would suggest that supercars and exotics would rule the Instagram roost given the mind-melting eye candy they proffer. But as it turns out the all-American pony car, Ford Mustang, took the gong, with almost 12 million shares, followed by the Honda Civic with just over 7.4 million.

That's a significant gap between first and second, showing just how popular the Mustang is in popular culture today.

For the record Aussie cars scored quite a few hits, but not at the same levels as the internationally recognised vehicles. For example, the Holden Commodore was the subject of around 340,000 shares with the #commodore and #holdencommodore tags.

The Ford Falcon is a tricky one because the #falcon hashtag has 2.37 million shares, but includes a lot of avians. The #fordfalcon hashtag numbered around 100,000 – not bad.

Back to the international list and the other three American cars in the top 10 included the Chevrolet Camaro, Chevrolet Corvette and Jeep Wrangler, while the other Japanese car was the Nissan GT-R.

The BMW M3 and M4 were very popular while the Audi R8 just snuck into the top 10 with 'only' 2,9 million shares.

The number of hashtags shared are all time, or since Instagram started in 2010, so if you search for #Civic today, you'll get slightly more than listed.

Here are the top 10 cars of Instagram:
Ford Mustang (#fordmustang + #mustang) 11,947,872
Honda Civic (#hondacivic + #civic) 7,402,365
Nissan GT-R (#nissangtr + #gtr) 7,019,123
