Jaguar’s slinky new E-PACE compact SUV is set to arrive in Australia from around April 2018 priced from $47,750.
That means it will undercut the BMW X1, currently the best-selling prestige compact SUV in the country at present, accounting for just under 30 per cent of the market. The Mercedes-Benz GLA is second, followed by the Audi Q3.
Jaguar expects the new E-PACE will become its top-selling vehicle here in Australia and globally, as demand for SUVs shows no signs of abating.
All Jaguar E-PACE models will come with a 2.0-litre Ingenium turbo engine – petrol or diesel – hooked up to a nine-speed automatic transmission.
The entry-level Jaguar E-PACE ($47,750 plus on-road costs) buys you a 110kW turbo-diesel motor and basic equipment.
However, the range-topping Jaguar E-PACE R-Dynamic First Edition ($84,370 plus ORCs) gets all the fruit and a turbo-petrol motor outputting 220kW and 400Nm. It rips to 100km/h in 6.4sec and has a top speed of 243km/h.
That said, it won't leave you much change from $100,000 if you go crazy with options.
The high-riding five-door Jag wagon doesn't undercut the most basic 2WD versions of the Audi Q3 (from $43,400) or Mercedes GLA (from $43,900), but all E-PACE models are AWD and come standard with autonomous emergency braking (AEB). Some models will get autonomous steering too.
Detailed standard features are not yet available but the E-PACE is expected to be fitted with more gear than the poverty-pack models from its German rivals.
What we do know is that the little cat comes with five USB ports and four 12-volt sockets as standard, a big glovebox and large 577-litre boot.
An optional 12.3-inch digital instrument panel for the driver, like Audi’s virtual cockpit, joins a 10-inch central touch-screen infotainment system. A head-up display is also offered – and should work with polarised sunglasses too.
Interestingly, the F-PACE is not built in England but in Austria, at the Magna Steyr facility. A Chinese factory will also come online in 2018 to meet what is expected to be intense global demand for the vehicle.
The sporty exterior design is matched with upmarket interior styling, both of which will be the key selling points of the vehicle – as will low fuel use, ranging between 5.6 and 8.0L/100km.
Buyers could, however, be paralysed by choice as there are up to eight models for each engine type, including regular, S, SE and HSE, then R-Dynamic versions of each.
