Kia Futuron EV concept revealed

Autonomous crossover coupe makes global debut in China

Kia has taken the covers off an SUV ‘coupe’ concept it says will lead the way for its future electric vehicle designs.

Appropriately named the Futuron, Kia’s latest SUV concept was unveiled at this week’s China International Import Expo in Shanghai.

An elongated bonnet transitions into a smooth curvaceous and futuristic two-door body with short overhangs and sits on a long three-metre long wheelbase.

Kia is yet to specify power figures or range details for the Futuron, but does say a high-capacity battery is fitted low in the body and sends electricity to four powerful in-wheel electric motors.

The sleek crossover is equipped with a cutting-edge e-AWD system that Kia says delivers lightning-fast responses to driver inputs.

Fitted with Level 4 autonomy, the Futuron offers hands-off and eyes-off driving in most conditions, as well as flexible seating similar to what ‘first-class airline passengers’ are treated to.

The ‘zero-gravity’ seating includes an upright ‘driving’ position, reclined ‘rest’ position and a retractable steering wheel.

On the outside, the concept’s edgy front-end presents a new, wider ‘tiger nose’ grille that now spans almost the entire width to create an aggressive ‘tiger face’. A geometric patchwork of matrix LED lighting also forms a Star Cloud design on the concept’s exterior.

The Korean brand describes the Futuron as a “sports car on an SUV platform”, sitting just over 4.8m in length and with plenty of ground clearance to create a “create a dynamic, confident posture”.
