A seven-round rally series based in the UK and featuring competition-prepared Land Rover Defenders has gained support from a likely quarter – the vehicle manufacturer itself.
The series will commence next year and has been developed by long-time Land Rover collaborator, Bowler Motorsport, as a "feeder series" for the Dakar Rally and other 'rally-raid' events. Bowler has arranged for the series to be regulated under the watchful eye of the MSA (Motor Sports Association), in accordance with FIA vehicle compliance. This allows competitors to run the vehicles in other events around the world.
The 'Defender Challenge by Bowler' series is aimed at attracting both experienced competitors and novices. Obtaining a competition licence and undergoing the necessary training are made easier for inexperienced crews by the series organisers. A training and test day is planned for February.
Keeping things simple, the Defenders will all be equipped with the same uprated 2.2-litre diesel engine running through a standard six-speed manual transmission. Control tyres will be supplied by Kumho and both the roll cage and fire extinguisher system are to be MSA-approved.
While the events are yet to be confirmed, the organisers plan for the opening round to take place in Wales from March 2, next year. The series will be staged throughout the year in the English counties of Somerset, Nottinghamshire, Shropshire and Dorset, with two rounds in Wales and one in Scotland.
"Land Rover is delighted to be supporting Bowler with the Defender Challenge in what is the next step in our long-term strategic partnership," said Mark Cameron, Land Rover Global Brand Experience Director.
"The Defender Challenge by Bowler rally series will push the iconic Defender’s breadth of capability beyond established boundaries – it is the ideal accessible platform to provide customers with an entry-level rally series and for those who are considering entering world-stage rally-raids such as the Dakar."
The 'Defender Challenge by Bowler' series provides a 'turn-key' solution for competitors aspiring to work their way up to Dakar Rally level, but budget will be a stumbling block for some, with the cost of the vehicle amounting to £50,000 before VAT (our GST) and entry to the series setting back crews a further sum, ranging from £10,000 to £14,000, depending on the package selected.
