Mazda CX-5 GT SP revealed

Sporty new model grade extended to popular SUV as part of update across range

Mazda Australia has revealed its updated 2021 Mazda CX-5, which gains a new model grade – the dark and stormy GT SP – and a handful of extra features across existing models.

Pricing for the Toyota RAV4 and Nissan X-TRAIL competitor has risen by between $200 and $1050 depending on the variant, with the comprehensive MY21 Mazda CX-5 range now priced between $31,190 and $52,380 plus on-road costs.

See full pricing details in our table below.

Following a similar move with the Mazda6 and CX-9, the sporty Mazda CX-5 GT SP slots into the range as a high-spec model, while a larger and higher-tech 10.25-inch touch-screen with an upgraded operating system and sharper visuals is added to the three top-tier grades: GT, GT SP and Akera.

However, unlike updated Japanese-market CX-5 models, diesel variants don’t get the new 147kW power bump, remaining at 140kW.

Other changes to the 2021 Mazda CX-5 include 17-inch alloy wheels added to entry-level CX-5 Maxx models, replacing steel rims.

Mazda CX-5 GT SP upgrades

Priced from $47,490 plus ORCs for the 2.5-litre petrol (140kW/252Nm) and $49,990 plus ORCs for the 2.5-litre turbo-petrol version (170kW/420Nm), the Mazda CX-5 GT SP slots in at the top end of the range and gains several eye-catching upgrades – most notably black 19-inch alloy wheels.

There’s also black exterior mirror caps and, inside, Maztex synthetic leather and suede upholstery with red stitching (in lieu of leather trim).

Otherwise, the SP takes all of the regular GT features including dual-zone climate-control air-conditioning with rear air-vents, centre armrest storage and USB charging ports in the back, satellite navigation, traffic sign recognition, a digital instrument cluster, advanced keyless entry, a power sliding and tilt glass sunroof and remote-operated power tailgate.

The addition of the new 10.25-inch full-colour widescreen display will add further appeal to the Mazda CX-5 GT SP models, which are exclusively all-wheel drive and use a six-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters.

2021 Mazda CX-5 range updates

The expanded Mazda CX-5 range is offered with a broad array of four-cylinder powertrains, including 2.0-litre petrol (115kW/200Nm), 2.5-litre petrol (140kW/252Nm), 2.5-litre turbo-petrol (170kW/420Nm) and 2.2-litre turbo-diesel (140kW/450Nm) engines.

Manual and automatic gearboxes along with front- and all-wheel drive layouts are offered.

The next-generation Mazda CX-5 is expected to blow out its current $52K flagship model with a six-cylinder version that could top $60,000.

All Mazda CX-5 models are covered by a five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty and come with a five-star ANCAP safety rating from 2017.

Standard safety features across the range includes blind spot monitoring, rear parking sensors, rear cross traffic alert, autonomous emergency braking (forward and reverse gears) with day/night vehicle and pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, lane keep assist and adaptive cruise control. Six airbags are also on board.

Sales of the Mazda CX-5 reached 21,979 units in 2020, accounting for 14.4 per cent of the medium SUV segment. There was only one other SUV that outsold it, the Toyota RAV4 with 38,537 sales, which equated to a share of just over 25 per cent.
