Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross PHEV: Australian price and specs

Plug-in hybrid version of facelifted mid-size SUV brings 55km of EV range and can power your home

Three versions of the new Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross PHEV (plug-in hybrid) will arrive in Australia next month priced from $46,490 plus on-road costs.

Bringing the number of variants in the facelifted 2021 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross range released last November to 12, the first plug-in version starts just $500 higher than the cheapest plug-in hybrid mainstream mid-size SUV, the MG HS PHEV (from $45,990 plus ORCs).

However, it’s also only $1500 more affordable than Mitsubishi’s own Outlander PHEV (from $47,990), which will be replaced by a bigger and likely more expensive model later this year.

The all-wheel drive Eclipse Cross PHEV employs an electric motor for each axle and ditches the 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine in the rest of the range in favour of a bigger 2.4-litre naturally-aspirated engine.

Combined performance outputs have not been revealed for the Eclipse Cross PHEV, but it generates 94kW of power and 199Nm of torque (at the same 4500rpm) from its Atkinson Cycle petrol engine.

It then adds a 60kW/137Nm front electric motor and a 70kW/195Nm motor on the rear axle, both of which draw their energy from a 13.8kWh battery to deliver 55km of claimed EV range – about the same as the MG HS and Outlander PHEVs.

The PHEV system, which adds 330kg of weight to the entry-level front-drive ES variant (1550kg), results in official combined fuel consumption of just 1.9L/100km (and CO2 emissions of only 43g/km), which is 0.2L/100km more than the front-drive MG HS PHEV.

The world’s biggest PHEV maker claims the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross PHEV is good for 130km/h in EV running, but adds another two drive modes to the mix: Series Hybrid mode (where the petrol engine acts as a generator for the battery) and the Parallel Hybrid mode, with all the motors driving together, above 70km/h.

There’s also a regenerative braking system for the Eclipse Cross PHEV, as well as a stand-alone gear lever and the Mitsubishi Remote Control smartphone app, which allows for bi-directional charging to provide power to homes, for example, in blackouts.

It will arrive in ES, Aspire and Exceed trim levels, all of which employ an 8.0-inch touch-screen multimedia system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Bluetooth, plus 18-inch wheels and tyres.

The Aspire costs $49,990 plus ORCs and adds adaptive cruise control, fake leather and suede trim, front parking sensors and an electric driver’s seat, and doubles the speaker count to eight.

The $53,990 (plus ORCs) Exceed adds actual leather, a double sunroof, LED headlights, satellite-navigation, head-up display, an electric passenger seat and heated steering wheel.

The 4545mm-long Eclipse Cross PHEV shares the same five-star ANCAP safety rating and 2670mm wheelbase of the combustion-powered versions and is also 1805mm wide and 1685mm high.

But it loses 46 litres of luggage space – down to 359 litres – compared to its siblings.

The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross PHEV’s battery will charge to 80 per cent in just 25 minutes via the CHAdeMO charging system employed by Japanese manufacturers.

It will take seven hours to charge to 100 per cent using a Mode 2 charger and 3.5 hours with a Mode 3 charger.
