Mitsubishi Pajero Sport updated for 2020

Pricing and specification details revealed for Triton-based off-road SUV

Mitsubishi has whipped the covers off the updated 2020 Pajero Sport.

Adopting many of the changes already debuted on the MY19 Mitsubishi Triton, with which it shares its key underpinnings, the 2020 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport will be safer and more feature-laden than before as it takes the fight to rivals including the Ford Everest, Holden Trailblazer, Isuzu MU-X and Toyota Fortuner.

The updates coincide with a minor list price increase across the board but already Mitsubishi is offering special drive-away incentives. As such, the entry-level five-seat GLX starts at $45,990 drive-away while the mid-spec seven-seat GLS starts at $53,990 drive-away.

The 2020 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport embraces the Triton’s new dynamic shield grille and headlight combination and new daytime running lights and bumpers. The bonnet is also higher than before.

There are also new alloy wheel designs and repositioned side steps purportedly bringing more ground clearance.

Inside, the updated model gets a new 8.0-inch touch-screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Flagship variants score TomTom hard-wired navigation and a digital instrument screen.

Elsewhere, there are new storage areas near and under the gear shifter, along with a powered tailgate on certain variants.

Entry variants now get as standard: hill descent control, trailer stability control, reversing camera, rear parking sensors, digital radio, four USB ports, one 220-volt socket, one HDMI socket and three 12-volt outlets, a proximity key fob, rear air-vents, side steps and roof rails and fabric seat trim.

The big change comes in the form of more standard safety equipment, with every Pajero Sport model now boasting seven airbags and forward collision mitigation (autonomous emergency braking). There’s also blind-spot monitoring system, plus lane-change warning and rear cross-traffic alert available.

Under the bonnet, Mitsubishi says it has made small tweaks to the 133kW/430Nm 2.4-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel, including a reworked combustion chamber and fuel injectors, bringing a lower compression ratio. There’s also a new aluminium alloy cylinder block said to save mass.

As before, the Pajero Sport is paired with Mitsubishi’s Super Select 4WD-II system and five off-road driving modes, as seen in the Triton.

The 2020 Pajero Sport colour palette has been extended by two hues: White Diamond and Graphite Grey.
