The long-running Mitsubishi Pajero line-up has been cut in Australia just months after it was announced the popular seven-seat SUV would be axed in Japan altogether.
Mitsubishi hopes the range rationalisation will increase the Pajero’s sales, which have been overtaken in recent years by the Triton-based Pajero Sport that’s about to be updated, as well as the Hyundai Santa Fe and Mazda CX-9.
As part of the consolidation, Mitsubishi has discontinued the range-topping Pajero Exceed, leaving the base-model GLX and mid-spec GLS as the only two variants to choose from.
Pricing for those models remains the same, with the GLX at $53,990 (plus on-road costs) and the GLS at $59,490 (plus ORCs), but both models have received minor equipment updates.
Mitsubishi Pajero GLS variants gain a Rockford Fosgate 12-speaker audio system, while the now top-spec GLX gets HID headlights with auto high-beam, auto-levelling and headlight washers.
GLS versions come with smartphone mirroring, while the GLX adds heated and electrically-adjustable front seats, dusk-sensing headlights and rear parking sensors.
All Mitsubishi Pajeros are powered by the same 3.2-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine, producing 147kW of power and 441Nm of torque, and paired to a five-speed automatic transmission. Power is sent to all four wheels via Mitsubishi’s Super Select II 4WD system.
All models also come with a reversing camera, a full suite of airbags, electronic stability control, anti-skid brakes and emergency brake assist, but higher-tech safety features such as autonomous emergency braking (AEB) and adaptive cruise control remain unavailable.
The 2020 Mitsubishi Pajero range is on sale now.
