More Toyota GR Yaris supplies coming

But if you order either the GR Yaris or Rallye version today, you’ll have to wait until 2022 to drive it

Toyota has confirmed a new allocation of the Toyota GR Yaris and new GR Yaris Rallye hot hatch pairing is bound for Australia in 2022.

Speaking at the launch of the new 2021 Toyota GR Yaris Rallye this week, Toyota Australia’s sales and marketing vice-president Sean Hanley said a new shipment of the fettled Yaris duo was bound for Australia.

“We’ve allocated over 1000 cars combined so far and they’re currently being delivered to customers,” Hanley said.

“We expect to deliver the majority of cars in the first allocations of these vehicles by the end of this year. We’re endeavouring to get further allocation of the Rallye and the standard car later this year; we haven’t confirmed the number yet but we are aiming to get more.”

Ever since Toyota announced an introductory drive-away price of $39,950 for the first 1000 examples of the Toyota GR Yaris last year – stock that was swept up in less than a week – there has been persistent demand for the performance hero and its even hotter Rallye sibling.

It has also led to opportunistic GR Yaris owners offloading their vehicles on the used car market for much more than they paid for it new.

Toyota says it has more than 2200 orders currently in the system for both the GR Yaris and GR Yaris Rallye, and that based on its current supply schedule, about 2000 of these will be fulfilled this year – with “a small percentage to be fulfilled in early 2022”.

That means that customers who order a GR Yaris or GR Yaris Rallye today will need to wait until 2022 for delivery.

“This is not a limited car, we will bring this car in according to the demand,” Hanley said.

“It is a car for enthusiasts so it’s a special kind of vehicle and a market that is quite niche.”

Already on sale overseas under different names, the circuit-tuned Toyota GR Yaris Rallye lobs in Australian showrooms this week.

Although it doesn’t get a powertrain upgrade, meaning the 1.6-litre three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine continues to belt out 200kW and 370Nm, pumping through a six-speed manual for a 230km/h top speed and a 5.2sec 0-100km/h sprint, the GR Yaris Rallye does get a number of track-ready chassis upgrades.

The 18-inch cast alloy wheels by Enkei are swapped out for lighter, stronger forged alloy BBS rims of the same diameter, which will reduce unsprung weight and improve handling, as will grippy Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres.

The GR Yaris Rallye also features stiffer track-tuned suspension and a pair of Torsen limited-slip differentials for both the front and rear axle, improving power delivery at full noise, while the brakes are unchanged (save for red-painted callipers) with all-ventilated discs measuring 356mm up front and 297mm at the rear.

There was initial speculation the GR Yaris would be limited to 250 vehicles. However, Hanley has now confirmed that allocation was not limited – despite each vehicle being numbered via a plaque on the dashboard.

“The numbering system was simply because the customers who purchase this car like the exclusivity,” he said.

“We always set out to reignite the performance market; the strategy was sound. We’re very pleased with the overall response. It has certainly put GR on the map in Australia and I think it’s set the brand up well for the future.

“There is still a market out there and people are still gravitating. Obviously, it’s not the same volume, but that’s the reason we’re going for a second production allocation.”
