New drawing previews 2020 Volkswagen Golf

Sketches released less than two weeks ahead of eight-gen VW hatch's global launch

Fresh drawings of the 2020 Volkswagen Golf hatchback have been posted ahead of its unveiling on October 24 in Wolfsburg, Germany.

The images preview a swoopier, sportier evolution of the current car, possibly depicting either the GTI or R version of the humble hatch courtesy of large rims, a prominent rear spoiler and an aggressive-looking front bumper that incorporates a deep air dam with complex aero elements.

In reality, it's thought the next eighth-generation Golf won't look quite as striking as the preview, with the production VW hatch looking closer to the earlier leaked images.

That means the 'real' car will feature actual door handles, wiper blades and much, much smaller wheels.

Volkswagen hasn't released any more details with the sketches but the global best-seller has already been touted by the car-maker to enter a new age of “electrified drives, a digitalised and connected interior world, assisted driving and online-based functions and services”.

One feature the 2020 Golf will miss out on though is a full pure-electric powertrain.

That's because Volkswagen doesn't want it to steal sales from its new-born sibling, the exclusively battery-powered I.D. 3 that was launched last month at the Frankfurt motor show.

In Europe, Volkswagen says the new Golf will be on sale as soon as this December but sales in Down Under aren't tipped to commence until much later in 2020.

Wider and fractionally longer than the current car, but no taller, the Mk 8 Golf isn't completely new as it's based on a thoroughly updated version of the current car's MQB architecture.

The revised 'MQB Evo' platform should be significantly more rigid than the current underpinnings while bringing a useful 50kg weight saving – although all that mass will be added back in with the addition of the mild-hybrid tech.

Speaking of which, under the bonnet the next Golf will feature electrified powertrains with both the car-maker’s new 12-volt and more sophisticated 48-mild-hybrid systems set to slash CO2 emissions while boosting acceleration.

The powertrains will be headlined by a mildly updated version of the current Golf 7’s 1.5-litre TSI ACT (Miller Cycle) four-cylinder engine that gets cylinder-on-demand technology, variable valve timing and lift, and both direct and indirect fuel injection.

A tiny 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo engine will also star, as well as an all-new 1.5-litre diesel. At the top of the diesel line-up will be the EA 288 EVO 2.0-litre turbo-diesel.

The flagship petrol model, meanwhile, will be a new VW Golf GTI that’s tipped to get the latest version of VW’s 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder petrol engine, codenamed EA888 – expect at least 190kW.

An even more powerful R version will follow.

Both a six-speed manual and seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission will be offered with all-wheel drive available on the most powerful models.

Inside, the new sketches show off a cabin dominated by a cool digital dash that stretches from the driver's door card all the way across to the passenger side.

Almost certain to feature class-leading new tech including permanent internet access, the Golf will provide unmatched levels of connectivity and new innovations like gesture control that are foreign to the small hatch class.

The new Golf will also feature a huge array of semi-autonomous driving aids, including the Volkswagen Group’s latest Traffic Jam Assistant.

Stay tuned, because Volkswagen is bound to continue to tease its best-seller in the build-up to the grand unveiling on October 24.
