New Land Rover Defender pricing announced

Born-again off-road icon goes upmarket in price as well as spec

Australian pricing and specs for the all-new 2020 Land Rover Defender have been announced tonight and, as expected, the reinvented British off-roader’s more advanced design and technology is reflected by much higher pricing.

As Land Rover forecast when it was revealed at the Frankfurt motor show last month, the new Defender 110 will arrive in Australia in June 2020 with a starting price of around $70,000 – a far cry from the $54,290 price tag its venerable predecessor was last sold at before it was discontinued in 2016.

The cheaper two-door Defender 90 won’t become available here until late next year, priced from above $55,000 – again well above the old Defender’s last starting price of $42,800.

For now, the 2020 Land Rover Defender 110 four-door is available to order with nine variants to choose from, including six equipment levels and three powertrain choices – two 2.0-litre four-cylinder twin-turbo diesels and a 3.0-litre turbo-petrol inline six.

All variants will come standard with four-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission with two-speed transfer case and Terrain Response; there will be no manual, Australians will miss out on Europe’s 224kW 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine and local fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are yet to be confirmed.

Opening the range at $69,990 plus on-road costs is the entry-level D200 – the only variant powered by a 147kW/430Nm 2.0-litre turbo-diesel, which in the UK is claimed to accelerate to 100km/h in 10.3 seconds and consume between 8.9-9.6L/100km.

There’s a big jump to the D240, which runs a more powerful (177kW/430Nm) version of the same engine and hits 100km/h in a claimed 9.1sec, but costs $75,900 plus ORCs.

The D240 is available in base, S ($83,800), SE ($91,300) and First Edition ($102,500) forms, while the cheapest petrol Defender is the P400 S, priced at $95,700 plus ORCs.

The P400 engine, a 297kW/550Nm 3.0-litre twin-scroll turbocharged petrol straight-six with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology, is claimed in the US to accelerate the Defender to 100km/h in just 6.1sec and consume 11.2-12.1L/100km.

The P400 mill will be offered in four model grades including the sub-$100K S – SE ($103,100), HSE ($112,900) and flagship X, which tops the range at $137,100 plus ORCs.

Standard equipment for Australia’s entry-level Defender 110 will include electronic air suspension, 18-inch wheels, a full-size spare, tyre pressure monitoring, hill start assist, hill decent control and LED headlights.

Safety equipment will be equally generous, including autonomous emergency braking, surround-view monitor, cruise control with speed limiter, driver attention alert, lane-keep assist, traffic sign recognition and wade sensing.

Inside, there’s rubber flooring, dual-zone climate control, black fabric trim, eight-way power-adjustable and heated front seats, push-button start, 12V boot outlet and a 10.0-inch infotainment touch-screen with digital radio, satellite navigation, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

In addition, S grades gain extras including 19-inch wheels, automatic high-beam, interactive instrument cluster, front and rear centre armrests and a leather-clad steering wheel, while SE grades add a powered steering column and ClearSight digital rear-view mirror.

HSE models boast 20-inch wheels, keyless entry, power-folding wing mirrors and a Meridian sound system, with the SE adding blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, among other items.

Both the First Edition and X variants score Terrain Response 2, matrix LED headlights, a panoramic sunroof, black contrast roof and a refrigerated front console.

But only the latter gets All Terrain Progress Control, electronic active differential with torque vectoring and head-up display.

Only seven exterior paint colours will be available and just one of them is a standard solid hue (Fuji White), with Santorini Black, Indus Silver, Eiger Grey, Pangea Green, Gondwana Stone and Tasman Blue metallic paints adding $1950 for all but First Edition and X models.

Jaguar Land Rover Australia continues to offer a relatively modest three-year/100,000km factory warranty.
