The next-generation 2021 Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series might be shaping up as a V6-only model, but its large luxury SUV twin – the 2022 Lexus LX – now appears certain to bring heavier artillery in the form of a brand-new twin-turbo petrol V8.
Toyota's future product rollout in North America was leaked earlier this week, revealing a number of new models including a new Tundra ute and new GR 86 sports car, and now details of the Lexus model pipeline over the next couple of years is emerging.
The biggest news from the Japanese luxury brand's internal product presentation in the US is a 450kW (600hp) twin-turbo petrol V8 that will reportedly power the next Lexus LX.
Lexus recently confirmed the AMG-style V8, which is also expected to displace around 4.0 litres, and announced it would debut the new powerplant in its Lexus LC race car at the (now postponed) Nurburgring 24 Hour race.
It's understood the new twin-turbo V8 will generate around 450kW and 750Nm initially. The new V8 is expected to make its showroom debut in the upcoming Lexus LC F and could also work its way into the new-generation Lexus IS series, which according to the leaked info will launch in 2021.
A new 450kW Lexus IS F sedan would finally give Toyota’s premium brand a bona-fide rival for the Mercedes-AMG C 63 too.
The new Lexus LX is expected to arrive in 2022 – a year after the LandCruiser 300 Series arrives with a range of turbocharged V6 diesel, petrol and hybrid powertrains. The latter pair are tipped to be based around the 310kW/600Nm 3.4-litre twin-turbo V6 from the Lexus LS 500.
The current Lexus LX 570 is offered with an aged, naturally-aspirated 5.7-litre petrol V8 outputting 270kW/530Nm. Its twin, the Toyota LandCruiser 200 Series, remains available in Australia only with a 200kW/650Nm turbo-diesel V8, but the days of the V8 LandCruiser are numbered as the 300 Series is expected to go exclusively to six-cylinder in Australia.
Both eight-seat vehicles are expected to be based on a new ladder-frame platform dubbed TNGA-F.
Other information gleaned from the leaked Lexus product presentation includes the launch of a new Lexus NX mid-size SUV in 2021 and the renewal of the larger Lexus RX SUV in 2023.
Life-cycle updates for the mid-size Lexus ES sedan and LS limousine will apparently lob in 2022 and the GS large sedan will be reportedly be replaced by a luxury version of the zero-emission, hydrogen-powered Toyota Mirai FCEV.
