New Peugeot 2008 to 'disrupt'

French brand confident of success with all-new light SUV, despite significant price hike

The soft landing of the second-generation Peugeot 2008 in Australia is about to begin, ahead of customer deliveries in December.

Priced from a higher-than-expected $34,990 plus on-road costs in one of the most crowded SUV categories in Australia, the new-generation Peugeot 2008 will do double duty to also fill the vacant space left by the 208 city hatch until sometime deep into 2021.

There are two grades of Peugeot 2008 at launch, each providing a different spin for the youthful end of the SUV spectrum.

The Allure from $34,990 is about design and comfort, while the GT Sport from a whopping $43,990 plus ORCs does what the name says as a driver’s car.

There will also be a mid-grade GT to sit between the pair, but not until the second quarter of next year.

The previous Peugeot 2008 started from $25,990 in Australia with the Active variant – $9000 below the new entry point – while the Allure kicked in at $29,990, still $5K clear of the latest model.

The general manager of Peugeot Citroen Australia, Kate Gillis, told carsales: “It’s a super-important car for the Peugeot brand. It feels like it’s going to disrupt the category. I know it will be very competitive.

“We’re entering with a great product into the highly competitive light SUV category. This is the new generation of Peugeot models coming into this market.”

Gillis was not prepared to talk about sales predictions for the 2008, or the relative failure of the previous model, but is bullish.

“It’s the second generation so there is a different expectation. It really is based on the new design, the new direction, that started with the new 508 last September,” she said.

“I’m not really wanting to talk about the expectations on volume, but we believe it will be a strong player into our product line-up.”

She makes no apologies for the car’s premium pricing, and believes it is justified by the level of standard equipment. The only option, only on the GT Sport, is a $2000 sunroof.

“Price point is very important, but it’s also a slippery slope. We want every product to stand out,” Gillis says.

“Premium-isation of our products is one of our pillars for the brand. People are looking for a difference within their vehicles. It’s about really building the sustainability in our business.”

The mechanical package of the 2008 is built up from PSA Group’s common modular platform (CMP) using its PureTech 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine, a multiple Engine of the Year Award winner, in two tunes.

The Allure gets 96kW and 230Nm of torque, with a six-speed Aisin automatic gearbox, and the step up to the GT Sport brings 114kW/240Nm with an eight-speed Aisin. Both are front-wheel drive and meet Euro 6 emissions standards.

Peugeot is making a strong push on two fronts with the 2008: design and safety.

It says the car’s shape is deliberately un-boxy in a class filled mostly with compact cubes, with quality design and materials in the cabin.

It talks about the third-generation iCockpit dash with 3D instrument display, a 10-inch high-definition infotainment screen and its signature squared-off leather-wrapped steering wheel.

The nose stands out with LED lighting including what Peugeot calls ‘sabre tooth’ daytime running lights, a lot like the Monster Energy logo, as well as automatic high beam.

The safety package includes speed limit recognition, driver attention warning, lane keeping technologies and advanced autonomous safety braking including pedestrian and cyclist recognition.

The GT Sport also gets adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go function, lane positioning assist and active blind spot monitoring, but there is no real cross traffic alert on either model.

Other equipment specific to the GT-branded variant includes Nappa leather upholstery, 3D Navigation, eight-colour interior ambient lighting, aluminium pedals, and heated front seats with massage function. It also has 18-inch alloy wheels, up from 17s on the Allure.

Gillis was not prepared to divulge pricing or specification of the GT, but told carsales: “It probably leans a little more to the GT Sport, because it is a GT. It has some of the features, but at a different price point”.
