New Toyota LandCruiser V6 diesel to outgun V8

Is the mad rush on the current V8 worth it? Here’s some figures on the all-new V6 oiler to consider

The all-new 3.3-litre V6 turbo-diesel engine in the forthcoming 2021 Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series will have more muscle than the outgoing diesel V8, according to a credible new report out of Japan.

Published by auto website Creative311.com, the report reveals that the V6 diesel will pump out 230kW and 690Nm of torque.

carsales understands that these numbers will match, or be extremely close to, the official figures due to be provided when the world premiere of the new-generation 2021 Toyota LandCruiser takes place around August.

The timing will coincide with the 70th anniversary of the legendary 4x4 off-roader, given the original FJ Cruiser launched in 1951.

First Australian deliveries of the new Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series are expected later in 2021.

The more powerful and fuel-efficient engine is set to be paired to an advanced automatic transmission, most likely a 10-speed unit with a high- and low-ratio transfer case.

The new 230kW/690Nm V6 turbo-diesel – tipped to be a twin-turbo unit – will outpower the current 4.5-litre twin-turbo diesel V8’s 200kW and 650Nm by a reasonable margin.

The imminent retirement of the V8 is partly to blame for the current sales spike for Toyota LandCruiser 200 Series models, pricing for which has also skyrocketed in recent months and is showing no sign of abating.

However, this new intel may have an impact as potential buyers wait for the high-tech new-generation vehicle.

The six-cylinder diesel-powered LandCruiser 300 can be expected to maintain, if not better, the current 14-year-old LandCruiser’s 3500kg towing capacity.

The new-generation LandCruiser 300 Series’ off-road capability does not appear to be in doubt either, with leaked images showing a low-range transfer case, locking diffs and a crawl mode.

Some markets will also get a petrol-powered twin-turbo 3.5-litre V6, worth 313kW and 590Nm, according to Creative311.com.

This engine will not be offered in Australia from launch, as Toyota is tipped to take a diesel-only approach, given how low petrol sales of the LandCruiser were in the recent past.

The crucial new LC300 is set to offer a seven-seat layout, down from eight.

Tech levels will also be significantly enhanced with the fitment several large LCD screens, which include a 3D terrain monitor. A fingerprint security system is also on the cards.

Based on Toyota’s all-new TNGA-F ladder-frame chassis, the new LandCruiser will deliver a range of user-friendly tech, including an improved 12.3-inch touch-screen infotainment system along with all the latest autonomous driving functions, such as adaptive cruise control, lane centring assistance and traffic sign recognition.

In Japan there are said to be five model grades in order of price from lowest to highest: GX, AX, VX, ZX and GR-S.

Australian models are expected to follow the current line-up, with GX, GXL, VX and Sahara models, which are currently listed at between $80,996 and $124,396 (plus on-road costs).

However, the new LandCruiser 300 Series is expected to be considerably more expensive.
