Next-gen Volkswagen T7 Multivan teased again

Latest images reveals how VW has stretched the wheelbase to maximise space within

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has released yet another teaser of its all-new Volkswagen T7 Multivan as part of the build-up to its mid-June unveiling.

As well as the fresh pics, VW has finally confirmed the long-standing rumour that the new 2021 Volkswagen Multivan would be based on its MQB architecture, the same platform that underpins the latest Mk8 Volkswagen Golf and other models.

Set to feature a far longer wheelbase and both wider front and rear tracks, the German car-maker's commercial division also confirmed the new T7 Volkswagen Multivan will provide far more space than the current T6.1-based people-mover.

The latest sketches also suggest the new van will get an extra piece of glazing at the front A-pillar to increase visibility.

This has led some to suggest the additional glass is a throwback to the original T1 from 1950.

Other tributes to past vans include the character line that runs across the entire width of the T7's flanks, which is claimed to have been inspired by the later T3 that went on sale in 1979.

There’s still no word on what lies beneath the bonnet of the 2021 Volkswagen Multivan, but it’s thought the T7 will be launched with a plug-in hybrid powertrain lifted from the latest Mk8 Volkswagen Golf GTE.

Inside, there’s yet more Golf, with the T7 Multivan (and Transporter) getting the eighth-generation Golf’s digital instrument cluster and larger 10.0-inch infotainment screen.

Interestingly, the manual transmission is no more. Helping liberate space and presumably provide for a third front seat in some versions, there’s a dual-clutch DSG automatic transmission that is now shift-by-wire.

Providing class-leading space, the current van’s handbrake has also been rendered obsolete, replaced by an electronic park brake.

Making life easier when parking or navigating an urban environment is a new 360-degree camera system.

The T7 Transporter and Multivan are also expected to be recipients of some of Volkswagen’s latest semi-autonomous parking aids.
