Six-speed manual confirmed for new Nissan 400Z

Latest teaser confirms the last petrol-powered Z-car gets three pedals and a proper handbrake

As the September 16 unveiling of the near-production Z Proto concept fast approaches, Nissan has confirmed its upcoming new-generation Z sports car will come with a traditional six-speed manual gearbox.

Appealing to enthusiasts, the prototype of the new Z-car, hotly tipped to be called the ‘400Z’ once it hits the streets, not only features a manual transmission but a proper handbrake too, matching its unashamedly retro styling that includes headlights inspired by the original Datsun 240Z and tail-lights that look borrowed from the 300ZX (Z32).

As carsales has reported, the 2021 Nissan Z is expected to be powered by an Infiniti-sourced 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 outputting about 300kW — enough to smash the upgraded 285kW Toyota Supra coming later this year.

At around $70,000, Nissan’s all-new Z should also be more affordable than the $85K Supra too, although the born-again battle between the two Japanese rear-drive sports car icons will heat up further when NISMO and GRMN versions of both coupes are released down the track.
