Nissan hasn't abandoned IDx sports car

Japanese manufacturer hints a junior performance offering could yet materialise

Nissan’s on-again, off-again IDx Concept has been given resurrected – again.

Just when you thought the dazzling concept, first unveiled in 2013, was dead and buried, Nissan’s chief designer this week hinted the car-maker is still exploring options of a production version.

“It’s a nice car and nice design,” Shiro Nakamura told motoring.com.au at the Detroit motor show this week.

"I cannot say anything more than that. We are exploring many opportunities and that is one of the opportunities that we are exploring.”

The IDx Concept re-kindled the glory days for Nissan (along with Datsun) at its unveiling at the 2013 Tokyo motor show, prompting speculation of a rear-drive 200SX successor.

Since that time, when Nissan actually confirmed a production version would follow, speculation has been ramped up and hosed down by individual Nissan execs.

But Nissan performance lovers can perhaps take comfort from the new Vmotion 2.0 concept shown in Detroit.

While it doesn’t point directly to a Nissan production model, Nakamura said the prototype’s design and underpinnings will preview the car-maker’s next generation of models, including sports cars.

“Unfortunately, I cannot say anything more than that,” he reiterated.
