Peter Brock race car collection split and for sale

Some of Brock’s best known racers to go under the hammer

An almost-complete Peter Brock race car collection that was sold last month has been split up, and will go under the hammer again in September.

Lloyds Classic Car Auctions in Queensland has confirmed it will handle the individual sale of vehicles that formerly belonged to Peter Champion, a long-time friend of the late, great racer.

Champion most recently had the cars displayed at Dreamworld on the Gold Coast as part of the ‘Brock’s Garage’ attraction.

Last month, the prized racers were sold to an unnamed private buyer, and included the 1982/1983 Bathurst-winning HDT Brock VH Commodore and 1984 ‘Big Banger’ HDT Commodore VK Group C.

While stakeholders haven't identified how many of the cars will be re-sold, Lloyds is understood to have set an auction date in Bathurst some time in September.

“Our recent sale of the Ford GTHO Phase 3 Falcon selling for over $1 million shows that the interest and passion for Australian-made cars is still there and Lloyds Classic Car Auctions is excited to be part of this great movement,” said Lloyds head auctioneer, Bill Freeman.

“We want to take these extremely rare cars on tour and display them across the country in coming weeks, in what could be the last time ever to see them all together! This auction has a purpose and not only honors Brocky but will mark a truly special time in Aussie motoring history for enthusiasts in years to come.”

It is understood the undisclosed buyer will retain some of the almost-30 vehicles acquired from Champion and made famous by Brock, a nine-time Bathurst winner. This is likely to include Brock’s highly prized 1969 Bathurst Monaro HT.

There are reports that at least two others are destined to be raced in Heritage Touring Cars.

Champion, meanwhile, has since taken possession of the 2006 Daytona that tragically claimed Brock’s life during a rally event in Perth in 2006. He will also continue as owner of the HDT road car division, which he has separate plans for.

A long-time friend of Brock, the Queensland collector established Champion’s Brock Experience in Yeppoon in 2007, running the business until 2013.

Champion put the collection of cars on the market in 2013, on the proviso that it be purchased in its entirety. It remained under Champion’s roof until it was relocated to Gold Coast theme park Dreamworld in 2015 in the hope it would be seen by more people.

motoring.com.au has contacted Champion for comment.
