Environmental action group Planet Ark has applauded Tyre Stewardship Australia for its sponsorship of next month's National Recycling Week.
Tyre Stewardship Australia (TSA) first came to prominence three years ago for its work finding ways of converting material from old tyres to new purposes. Those purposes include road construction, soft playground surfaces, brake pads and industrial flooring. The old tyres are even useful as fuel, using 'Polymer Injection Technology' to produce 'green steel'.
Supporting TSA in its endeavours are tyre brands including Bridgestone, Continental, Goodyear Dunlop, Kumho, Michelin, Pirelli, Toyo and Yokohama. Retail chain Tyrepower and the Motor Trades Association of Australia are actively supportive of TSA also.
Each time a tyre is sent to recycling, TSA earns 25 cents. At present, TSA estimates that only 16 per cent of the country's annual tally of 50 million old tyres make it to recycling. TSA's sponsorship of National Recycling Week, which runs between November 13 and 19, is expected to draw more attention to the environmental challenge tyres pose.
