Porsche 935 to make Aussie debut

Moby Dick-channeling racer will headline Porsche onslaught at Australian F1 Grand Prix

The wild Porsche 935 race car will make its Australian debut at this weekend’s Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix in Melbourne.

One of just two 935s in Australia, from a total global production run of just 77 cars, will be the headline act of Porsche’s F1 activities at Albert Park this week.

The striking Porsche 935 will be on display all weekend adjacent to the Carrera Cup paddock, alongside an original 935, a 911 GT2 RS and a 911 GT2 RS Clubsport that will be used for this year’s Speed Comparison.

All four cars will also be on-track for demonstration laps on Sunday morning from 09:45am, on a weekend in which Craig Lowndes will make his debut in the Porsche PAYCE Carrera Cup Australia series.

“Motorsport is in the DNA of Porsche so it is only natural that the Grand Prix is traditionally one of our biggest events of the year,” said Porsche Cars Australia marketing and motorsport director Toni Andreevski.

“Both on-track and off-track, we will have wealth of activities for a variety of motorsport and Porsche fans.”

Unveiled at Rennsport Reunion VI in California in 2018, the Porsche 935 wears a striking aero body and Martini livery inspired by the legendary Porsche 935/78 Le Mans race car that fans dubbed ‘Moby Dick’ due to its elongated shape.

Apart from wheels and fairings that pay tribute to the original 935, the modern racer employs LED tail-lights on its rear wing endplates adopted from the 919 Hybrid LMP1 racer, and side mirrors from the current Le Mans-winning 911 RSR.

Its exposed titanium tailpipes are modelled on those of the 1968 Porsche 908 and the 935 is powered by a 515kW twin-turbo 3.8-litre flat six from the ballistic 911 GT2 RS road car.
