Porsche pondering 'pure' 911 GT5

Zuffenhausen planning back-to-basics 911 with less grip and aero

You'd be forgiven for thinking the Porsche 911 was its own bespoke brand, such is the availability of variants, spin-offs and specials like the Black Edition (pictured).

According to a UK report, that hasn't stopped the company planning what could be one of its most controversial models yet, coined the 911 GT -- although it should also be noted that Porsche has trademarked the GT5 name.

Autocar says a "pure" 911 is in the offing and will differ to the GT3 and GT3 RS models by featuring less effective aerodynamics and grip to deliver a more accessible performance threshold.

In other words, it's the car for Porsche drivers who perhaps aren't the best wheel men and women, those that simply want the satisfaction of driving on the limit at less extreme speeds, or those that care more for visceral engagement than lap times -- not unlike Australia's Best Driver's Car, you might say…

Although the new 911 GT5 has not been officially confirmed and little is known about its specification, rumour suggests it could be launched in 2016.

Unlike the majority of the 911 models that will adopt downsized turbocharged boxer engines for a mid-life facelift due here next year, the GT5 could retain a naturally-aspirated 3.8-litre flat six to ensure a more direct connection with the vehicle.

Of course a manual transmission will be a given, although unlike the Lotus Exige S, the new back-to-basics model is unlikely to forego the 911's (electric) power steering.
