Oil-stained logbooks could soon become a thing of the past thanks to a new innovation from Renault.
The French manufacturer has developed a new tamper-proof and secure digital car maintenance book that will offer unprecedented security and transparency.
Developed in conjunction with VISEO and Microsoft, the data is secured by Blockchain technology and is described as a “car passport”. Renault says it has a fully operational prototype model ready.
“Currently, information about customers and their vehicles is spread across multiple information systems maintained by automakers, insurers, repair shops, and more,” Renault says.
“This new digital car maintenance book, with its open architecture, gathers all important information in one place accessible by the customer.
“For instance, if an owner wants to sell a vehicle, he/she can make information about the history of the vehicle more transparent by authorising the potential buyer to access all the data in the digital car maintenance book, creating more trust between the buyer and the seller.”
Renault describes the digital logbook as a major step forward for connected vehicles.
“As part of the project, Microsoft provided access to the Microsoft Azure Blockchain technology, the open, agile and cost-effective platform and toolset used to develop and deploy the solution,” the company says.
Renault hasn’t yet identified the first application of its digital logbook, though based on the firm’s research, we suspect it won’t be too far away.
