Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus (SCG) has released renderings of a wild new supercar featuring a centrally-located driving position, just like the multi-million-dollar McLaren F1 supercar from the early 1990s.
Called the SCG 004S, the US-made exotic is based around a new carbon-fibre tub which is not only immensely strong and stiff, but also very light. Even after adding its ultra-lightweight skin, made of the same material, the new SCG is claimed to weigh just 1179kg – only 41kg heavier than the original British F1 hypercar.
Featuring a mid-mounted 485kW/720Nm twin-turbo 5.0-litre V8, the SCG is somewhat retro inside with a traditional open-gate six-speed manual gearbox and fully round -- not flat-bottom -- steering wheel.
An optional paddle-shift, single-clutch automated manual transmission is also expected.
SCG has not revealed any performance figures, but indications are for a sub-three-second 0-100km/h time and a top speed in excess of 330km/h.
Deliveries are expected to begin within 18 months and each 004S is tipped to be stickered at $US400,000 ($A520,000).
SCG hasn't announced how many 004S three-seaters it plans to make, but says that by 2020 it hopes to deliver around 250 cars per year.
To be in with a chance of owning one of the first batch of 25 004Ss, wealthy buyers have been invited to place a $US40,000 ($A52,000) deposit.
While owners wait for delivery of their car, SCG says it will enter a prototype 004S in the gruelling 24 Hours Nurburgring.
Later, the company has plans for fully-fledged competition versions competing in LM GTE, GT4 and GT3.
SCG hasn't yet announced if it plans to export the 004S outside North America.
