Sleek new Audi Q5 Sportback: Full Aussie details

Audi’s new tech-laden, design-focussed Q5 and SQ5 ‘coupe’ to arrive next month with premium pricing

Australian pricing and specifications have been announced for the first Audi Q5 Sportback, which brings a coupe-style body to the German brand’s popular mid-size SUV range for the first time.

Audi’s answer to the BMW X4 and Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe will arrive in showrooms in August, with prices starting at $77,000 plus on-road costs for the entry-level Audi Q5 Sportback 40 TDI quattro S line.

Therefore Audi’s newest Sportback model following the A1, A3, A5, A7, Q3 and e-tron will significantly undercut its chief rivals, the X4 (from $83,900) and GLC Coupe (from $96,900, both of which are petrol-only models.

But buyers opting for sleeker Audi Q5 Sportback variants will pay between $6000 and $16,000 more than the conventional Q5 wagon variant on which they are based.

That said, Audi has added a host of new tech and more standard features to the all-new Q5 Sportback.

For an extra $8100 over its conventional sibling, the entry-level Audi Q5 Sportback 40 TDI quattro S line is powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel aided by 48-volt mild-hybrid tech to deliver 150kW of power and 400Nm of torque.

Moving up the range, Q5 Sportback 45 TFSI quattro S line grade is priced from $86,300 plus ORCs and brings the same mild-hybrid tech but this time paired to a 2.0-litre four-pot turbo-petrol engine, producing higher outputs of 183kW/370Nm.

Audi claims fuel consumption figures of 5.4L/100km on entry-level diesel models, as well as a 0-100km/h sprint time of 7.6 seconds. The 45 TFSI’s powertrain is said to cut that sprint time to 6.3sec, but no consumption figure is listed for the latter.

Upping the ante, the flagship Audi SQ5 Sportback TDI is priced from $110,900 plus ORCs and comes with a 3.0-litre V6 turbo-diesel that outputs a healthy 251kW of power and 700Nm of torque, again thanks in part to a mild-hybrid system as well as an electric powered compressor (EPC).

Audi says the SQ5 Sportback develops power “earlier and more forcefully” than the existing SQ5 TDI SUV, which delivers the same outputs, and can sprint to triple digits in just 5.1sec on its way to an electronically limited top speed of 250m/h.

Both Audi Q5 Sportback grades come standard with a seven-speed S tiptronic automatic, while the SQ5 Sportback comes mated to an eight-speed tiptronic transmission. The latter also comes with a self-locking centre differential, with the ability to direct up to 85 per cent of torque to the rear wheels.

Set to target ‘style-conscious buyers’, the Audio Q5 Sportback comes with an all-new rear-end design and the option of digital ‘dancing’ OLED tail-lights that change depending on which drive mode is selected.

Up front, Q5 Sportback variants differ only slightly from the Q5 SUV, with S line exterior styling a standard inclusion, bringing a honeycomb pattern grille and trapezoidal front bumper design, along with matte aluminium inserts and S line badging around the body.

Two 20-inch wheel designs are fitted to the pair of Q5 Sportback grades, while the SQ5 rides on new 21-inch turbine wheels and brings Matrix LED headlights as standard, with auto high-beam and dynamic indicators.

The Audi Q5 Sportback range offers a 510-litre boot –
just 10 litres less than the regular Q5 SUV.

Standard features across the range include wireless phone charging, digital radio, dual Bluetooth connectivity, the ‘virtual cockpit’ digital instrument cluster, a 10.1-inch touch-screen and Audi’s connect plus functionality adding information such as real-time traffic, weather conditions, fuel prices, parking information and more.

Wireless Apple CarPlay also comes standard, however, Android Auto is wired.

Inside the cabin, entry-level grades bring sport front seats, black cloth headlining, aluminium interior inlays and exterior mirrors with heating, folding and auto-dimming.

Moving into the mid-grade 45 TFSI quattro brings Nappa leather trim with diamond stitching up front, matte brushed aluminium trim and a rear seat that can slide and recline.

Across the range, eight airbags come standard, along with a host of driver assistance aids including autonomous emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian detection, lane assist, rear cross traffic alert, park assist, a 360-degree camera, blind spot monitoring and tyre pressure monitoring.

Adaptive cruise control and traffic jam assist is also standard on all bar the entry Q5 Sportback 40 TDI.

Nine exterior colour options will be available, as will a $3140 five-year service plan package for Q5 Sportback variants, or a $3170 five-year service plan for the SQ5 Sportback.
