There is a tough new battleground awaiting the next-generation Mercedes-Benz GLS large SUV.
As well as existing rivals like the Audi Q7 and Range Rover, the GLS will more specifically go head-to-head with the all-new BMW X7.
Despite the comprehensive cladding and camouflage adorning this Gmud-registered GLS prototype snapped testing in Germany, it seems the all-new model will take a new styling direction substantially different to the current model.
Underneath will be Daimler’s new MHA platform, a full-size lightweight chassis architecture designed to accommodate the new inline six-cylinder engines and hybrid powertrains. European sources suggest the AMG version will again also be V8-powered.
As well, Mercedes’ MHA platform provides spacious accommodation for those in the third row.
As we’ve reported, the next GLS will form the basis of the first SUV from Mercedes-Maybach, an uber-luxurious rivals for the likes of Bentley’s Bentayga and the upcoming Rolls-Royce Cullinan.
Expect a 2019 launch either in North America early in the year or later at the Frankfurt motor show.
