A new Audi RS 7 Sportback is on the way, and it's to be offered in not just one, but two variants.
Reflecting the evolutionary nature of today's ultra high-performance cars, the more potent of the two will employ a plug-in hybrid powertrain.
The base Audi RS 7 is to be powered by a new 4.0-litre biturbo V8 familiar from the Porsche Panamera and the Bentley Continental GT, driving all four wheels through the Volkswagen group's latest eight-speed S tronic auto gearbox.
Based on the same 4.0-litre biturbo V8 as the 'regular' RS 7 variant and generating a total 500-plus kiloWatts like the Panamera Turbo S e-Hybrid, the 2019 Audi RS 7 hybrid is expected to be even faster than the conventional car's sub four-second zero to 100km/h sprint.
Built on a new platform, the Audi RS 7 Sportback will be the company's first plug-in performance car and owes much to Porsche's development work on its plug-in Panamera.
With Audi having indicated the RS 7 Sportback will be launched by the end of this year, nobody has yet spotted a photo any more revealing than this test mule, which reportedly gives little away of what the final production version will look like.
However, there's no doubt something is going on underneath the new, recently-launched A7 body, with the test mule's pumped-out wheel-arches and front and rear-end revisions.
The dynamic RS 7 duo is expected to follow the recently-launched Audi A7 Sportback later this year.
